Tuesday 11/02/2010 - Opening Day
They opened the K1 at about 9:50am, people running, some dropped their skis, saw one guy whos skis/poles/clothing were getting stuck on a fallen women and her skis and he just kept walking until finally getting untangled. Got to the top and as I was skiing down Great Northern as I was passing Blue Heaven I saw a pretty good sized moose walking up Blue Heaven towards Great Northern.
Guns going on Upper Double Dipper, Upper East Fall, Downdraft Headwall (except the top near the walkway) as well as a few on Great Northern near the bottom of the Snowdon Poma, and a single gun on Great Northern on the hill just past the bottom of the Northridge Triple. While taking runs on Northridge the snowmakers were getting more guns going, they lit up Great Northern from Rime all the way back around to the bottom of North Ridge, and snowmakers were hiking up Killink...
Overall pretty good skiing on Rime, the snow on Reason was good with some granular conditions on skiers left, Double Dipper guns started out dry at the top but they were putting down much wetter base snow down lower, Upper East Fall has areas of water and no snow with wet base building snow being blown up top. Towards the bottom of Lower East Fall they were blowing snow from both sides of the trail and the trail was covered pretty much edge to edge and the guns were much drier as the base was already down.
Ran into Shortski, skiing on some short skis , good to see you out there! Every chair on the Triple had people on it with a short liftline at the bottom. Trails weren't too crowded but Rime was steadily being used. Temps in the 20's and mostly cloudy with the sun coming out from time to time.
The hike back up took me about 8 minutes with 2 short breaks. Not too bad a hike but it did take a bit of energy to do it.
Overall a good first day at The Beast!

Re: Tuesday 11/02/2010 - Opening Day
Good pix, good report. Took a red eye back from Seattle last night, otherwise I'd be up there myself. I'll guess that the water you see on Upper East Fall is a leak from the snow making pipe.

October was really wet. I think that's just where the water naturally comes out of the ground and ledge. Those holes show up in the spring in the same spots, too.rogman wrote:Good pix, good report.
