First, we survived being born to mothers
Who smoked and/or drank while they were
Pregnant.

They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing,
Tuna from a can and didn't get tested for diabetes.

Then after that trauma, we were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cribs covered with bright colored lead-base paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles,
Locks on doors or cabinets and when we rode
Our bikes, we had baseball caps not helmets on our heads.

As infants & children,
We would ride in cars with no car seats,
No booster seats, no seat belts, no air bags, bald tires and sometimes no brakes.

Riding in the back of a pick-up truck on a warm day
Was always a special treat.

We drank water
From the garden hose and not from a bottle.

We shared one soft drink with four friends,
From one bottle and no one actually died from this.

We ate cupcakes, white bread, real butter and bacon..
We drank Kool-Aid made with real white sugar.
And, we weren't overweight.
WHY?

Because we were
Always outside playing...that's why!

We would leave home in the morning and play all day,
As long as we were back when the
Streetlights came on.

No one was able
To reach us all day. And, we were O.K.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps
And then ride them down the hill, only to find out
We forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes
a few times, we learned to solve the problem.

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's and X-boxes.
There were no video games, no 150 channels on cable,
No video movies or DVD 's, no surround-sound or CD's,
No cell phones, No personal computers, no Internet and no chat rooms.
WE HAD FRIENDS
And we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth
And there were no lawsuits from these accidents.

We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt,
And the worms did not live in us
Forever.

We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays,
Made up games with sticks and tennis balls and,
Although we were told it would happen,
We did not put out very many eyes.

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and
Knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just
Walked in and talked to them.

Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team.
Those who didn't had to learn to deal
With disappointment.
Imagine that!!

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law
Was unheard of.
They actually sided with the law!

These generations have produced some of the best
Risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever.

The past 50 years
Have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.
We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility,
and we learned how to deal with it all.

If YOU are one of them?
CONGRATULATIONS!
You might want to share this with others
who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the
lawyers and the government regulated so much of our lives

spot on steamboat. many memories ... what's happened to halloween. as kids we (unsupervised) hit virtually every house in the neighborhood and came home with bags of candy.

dknj wrote:Many parents are bringing their children up with video games and internet instead of outdoor activities.

yup my friend's kids are poster kids for this. went through all the grades of k ski school. skied with mom & dad everyday mom & dad skied until they were old enough to be left home which is exactly what they chose to do, playing video & internet games. when we were kids we were out all the time pushing the limits of the "be home by" time. different era for sure.

I'm not as pessimistic about it. I asked this same question earlier in the year and then started paying attention. There are in fact new people coming to Killington ski houses and some of them are in their 20's. However, they may not be part of your segment of the ski house social scene.

I only wish I found Killington in my 20s and pre-faimly days. Or atleast before my son was old enough to get into all the non-skiiing sports that he is into. Sure he loves to ski, but he also likes to play basketball, baseball, hockey... Now it's hard to get to Vermont more than 1 or 2 long weekends a year to ski. Being 7.5 hours away in PA doesn't help either.

I will be in my early 40s when my kid goes to college, I am hoping at that time in my life I can look into a ski house 1/2 or 1/4 share and routinely make it up to VT for some skiing in the winter.

You guys are confusing me. Are you calling Humpty a gay basher, or are you calling Humpty gay? And if you are trying to call him gay, then aren't you also using gay as an insult?

My kids sometimes reluctantly come to VT to ski (usually at the beginning and at the end of the season). This is because they are into other sports down here in the flatlands and they are either towards the end of the season or at the beginning of the season for those. Coaches down here are not too happy when we pull them from practice/play on the weekends to come up to ski. My daughter missed all of her volleyball games because they were occurring either Friday night or during the weekend during ski season.

Why not stay in the flatlands and let the kids do their other sports, at least early and late season?

Their skiing season was still going on and training and competitions were still going on. The Freestyle A team starts training as soon as the mountain opens and finishes when the mountain closes. The B team started their season a week later and finished their season a week later than they were suppose to finish.

The young people never left. Many just stay enjoying the winter over and over. The mountain keeps you young and you really don't age when you are out here. I am still young, own a big ski house that many of our family and friends come visit. We have many new up and coming young skiers/riders experiencing the Killington magic.

Quote of the Day- Ski Killington and you will never grow old.
