The Future of South Ridge

Postby Ragged#1 » Thu Jun 14, 2012 11:12 pm

Sadly no plans for a new lift to replace the classic SRT. Not a lot of discussion on it lately so I want to bring it up.
I hope they add a new chair soon because now that it's gone, people finally realized that it was used for a purpose. You cant go down that area anymore without having to get stuck down at bear and it take FOREVER to get back! Once you go down 4 way or blur heaven, Your not going back to K-1.

It is sad to see that POWDR is just leaving great areas like this one in the dust. South Ridge, Sunrise, Outpost and OF COURSE devil's fiddle area. They need to restore these areas and not just think about the more signature areas to the resort.

from nyberg's recent state of killington address, he mentions "adding uphill service in the South Ridge area" as one of the improvements. what that "uphill service" will be is anyone's guess. originally the srt was slated to be replaced by the old snowdon quad when that replacement happens. more recently nyberg has said it'll be a surface lift. we enjoy the jug and think it would be ruined if a surface lift was added there if the current lift towers are used. i'm hoping it'll be a chair, even a double would be sufficient. there are proponents of wanting the new lift to run to the summit but that'll never happen under the current management.

It's going to be really futuristic.

They could always make a new cut to run the surface lift through. Go a bit skiers left of Jug and run it up through Echo Woods. The whole area burned <60 years ago, so I'd expect they shouldn't have too tough of a time with getting permission for the cutting.

A detachable poma at 750ft/min would be quite excellent, and would result in a 5-6 minute lift ride. The jug would need to be widened about 20 ft to accomidate it. There would be about 3 areas where you would be able to cross the lift.

Poma (company) still makes and installs surface lifts very similar to the original snowdon poma.

However, I would prefer a double chair, extended down into falls brook and up to around FIS.

Actually, if you go down 4 way or Blue Heaven you can still get to the K-1 but you will have to ski trees or Ovation to get to it. The problem as others have posted, is if you ski the South Ridge trails you are stuck and must go to Bear.

You didn't really lose much when the Devil's Fiddle was removed, as the Bear Mountain Quad covers the identical terrain.

That's something quite different from Sunrise, where terrain was taken off the map; or the South Ridge, where the terrain is ON the map, but you can't ski it more than once, without taking a very circuitous route back.

Where/when did Nyberg say this?

Going from a regular lift to a surface lift is so backwards! Has anybody ever heard of a ski area going this route? If so, they're idiots too! It's ridiculous! I really hope they put in a regular lift. Of course, I don't expect to see anything there for at least 3 seasons.

Love all the extra exercise I get pushing my way from Superstar over to the K-1. When the SRT was running it was much easier to use Home Run as the Lazy-man's route over to the North side.

Any lift would be better than no lift! Perhaps it would be cheap enough where they would actually run it occasionally!

I'd take a surface Poma in there any day, vs. no lift... It would be warmer than the Fridge as it would be in the trees almost all the way.
Sunrise as was mentioned, would be great to get back, but the realist in me says, we will never ski those trails again...
