As for cutting a few trees, NICE , keep the wood up there for some nice fires that people would gather around ......WIN-WIN !

You know....they could put a magic carpet in somewhere to replace the peak walkway.

Great for getting to Needles, Superstar or Snowshed, but you still have to hike to K1 and beyond. They need that lift high to access the Canyon, K1, Snowdon and the Glades (North Ridge). Tourons don't want to hike between lifts and lodges while on vacation.

Those people you just insulted are essential to the survival of the resort. You might want to re-think your attitude towards them. And the statement isn't true anyway. Most skiers aren't keen to do a lot of hiking, whether they're vacationers, travelers, regulars, or whatever. That's why lifts were invented in the first place.

TheLurker wrote:Wouldn't putting a surface lift to the lodge cut across a trail or two?

Putting a useful surface lift anywhere on the south ridge would do that.

Opening up the crossover gets you to needles, which gets you to GE, which gets you down to the skyship. That would ease a lot of traffic at bear. You used to be able to easily take juggernaught down to the skyship also, which is now difficult and hard to find for most.

So a lift on upper pipe dream that would allow you to lap upper pipedream, GE and Jug, and access the canyon from superstar. Sounds awsome.

That's really not the benefit of the crossover. The benefit of the crossover is to let low-level skiers get out of Bear/Needles and over to Snowshed, Superstar and beyond, as well as provide the rest of us with more options for doing so.

At the moment, there is no way for anyone who isn't a strong intermediate to get out without having to take the Northbrook Quad out of Needles and take the long hike across Highlander and around, which is awful. Since this is awful, no one does it, and instead everyone takes Lower Bittersweet to escape, which is one of the most difficult intermediate trails on the mountain with it's usual conditions.

While Juggernaut is now difficult to find and use, it has never been used by more than a handful of people a day, and it's never really been all that easy to find. That also wouldn't help anything, as it's very, very flat in the section going from Bear to GE, too flat for most skiers to go down without walking much of the way.

That Snowshed crossover slashed 5 great trail in half with heavy beginner traffic and while it was fun to watch their terrified expressions now frozen in time as I screamed down Stichline or Vertigo I'm ok to let go....I think I have "grown". Beginners dont mind putzing around the mountain to traverse it and if you suck so badly you cannot ski anything other than the original snowshed crossover you should spend a day on snowshed with an instructor until you can. I do support the use of the crossover late season or when it suits me.

The replacement for the SRT will be this HSQ. Steve Selbo's bunch will pay for it and develop the 200 acres they own at Cherry Knoll.

Why not put in another chair with a corner and take it to the new lodge? South Ridge is an excellent intermediate area on peak days when the weather is nice. Going up the return line and then making a 90 would get you out of most of the bad weather.
Do they still own the land on Cherry Knoll or did that go to the land trust because they didn't want to put in spray fields at the bottom of the hill?

This is why I suggested a tunnel. Also you just need to go as far as dream maker so you can get to the skyship.

I bet that back in the late 70's the long term plan was to actually have that lift eventually, minus the top section.

In today's dollars, a lift like that with 2 turns, 3 sections and 6 stations.....probably $25m.

It's almost in line with the top of the lifts in the Northridge area. Could have ended it at Upper Double Dipper and made The Glades a madhouse with 3 lift terminals.

There is no posibility of a surface lift replacing the SRT.
