Darwin Candidate

(CNN) -- A man trying to create a Bigfoot hoax on a highway died after being hit by two cars, officials in Montana said.

Randy Lee Tenley dressed in a Ghillie suit -- camouflage designed to resemble heavy foliage -- and stepped out onto Highway 93 Sunday night, officials said.

"He probably would not have been very easy to see at all," said Jim Schneider, a state trooper.

A 15-year-old girl hit him with her car, another car swerved, and a third car driven by a 17-year-old ran him over, CNN affiliate KECI reported.

Tenley was "well into the driving lane," and according to his companions he was "attempting to incite a sighting of Bigfoot -- to make people think they had seen a Sasquatch," Schneider said in the KECI report.

But authorities received no calls from drivers thinking they had seen Bigfoot, the station reported.

Officials with Montana Highway Patrol District 6, which includes Flathead County where the incident took place, could not be reached for comment Tuesday morning.

MT driving License.

Montana’s graduated driver licensing law creates a three-step program that allows new drivers under the age of 18 years to safely develop and improve their driving skills. Each step progressively increases the privileges and responsibilities of a new driver in an effort to reduce the number of motor vehicle crashes involving minors.
Step 1: Permit Period

Age and Permits
Teenagers may obtain a Traffic Education Learner’s License (TELL) as early as age 14½ years old only if they are in a state-approved traffic education program (online courses are not approved).
Teenagers may get a Learner’s License from a driver exam station if they meet all of the following criteria:
are 15 years old and successfully complete a state-approved traffic education program (online courses are not approved), or are 16 years or older
pass the required driver license tests
turn in any other driver licenses
do not have a license suspended, revoked or denied in any other state or jurisdiction
pass the medical requirements for the type of driver license desired
have not been found by a court to be mentally incompetent, alcoholic and/or a habitual user of illegal drugs
Length of Permit
A teenager must hold a permit for a minimum of six consecutive months before applying for a First-Year Restricted License.
The permit is valid for up to one year.
Conditions During Permit Stage
Teen drivers must acquire at least 50 hours of supervised driving experience, including 10 hours at night.
A driver with a TELL permit must be supervised by a licensed parent or guardian.
A driver with a Learner’s License must be supervised by a licensed parent or guardian, or a licensed driver age 18 years or older who is authorized by the parent or guardian.
Everyone in the vehicle must wear a seatbelt.
The teen driver must not receive any traffic violations or alcohol/drug offenses in the six-month period before advancing to GDL Step 2.

Step 2: First-Year Restricted License

When teens have satisfied all Step 1 requirements, they may apply for a First-Year Restricted License at a driver exam station. They must:

pay the associated fees
bring all required documents
proof of identity
proof of Montana residency
proof of authorized presence
a completed Graduated Driver Licensing Parent/Legal Guardian Certification form

Initially, the driver license will show a restriction code on the front and back. This restriction remains in effect for one year. During this period, the following restrictions apply:

Everyone in the vehicle must wear a seatbelt.
Teenage drivers may not drive between 11:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m., with some exceptions.
These exceptions including emergencies, farm-related activities, travel to and from school, church or work, and specific parent-authorized purposes.
Law enforcement officials may contact the parent or guardian of a teen driver to verify the purpose for which the teen is authorized to drive between 11:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m.
For the first six months, unless supervised by a licensed driver age 18 or older, a teenage driver may have only one unrelated passenger under age 18 in the vehicle.
For the second six months, unless supervised by a licensed driver age 18 or older, a teenage driver may have three unrelated passengers under age 18 in the vehicle.

Penalties for violating the Step 2 license restrictions are:

First Offense – between 20 and 60 hours of community service
Second Offense – suspension of the teen’s driver license for six months

Step 3: Full Privilege Driver License

First-Year Restricted License restrictions automatically end on the date indicated on the back of the driver license, or when the individual turns 18, whichever occurs first. Once the teenager reaches Step 3, the driver license confers full privileges.
Cogito, ergo sum

Sometimes it is that simple.

In the news today is a Texas teen who apparently electrocuted herself in the bathtub by grabbing her cell phone while it was plugged into the charger.

Coe was a basketball player and number one char with her tuba in the bad at school. Her family was in the process of moving.

"This is such a tragedy that doesn't need to happen to anyone else," O'Guinn said. "We want something good to come out of this as awareness of not using your cell phone in the bathroom as it is plugged in and charging."
http://www.cbsnews.com/news/texas-teen- ... o-bathtub/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

This CBS news story also gets the tasteless and stupid journalism award. First, a spell check proof error that describes the electrocution victim's high school activities as "number one char", and second, the quote from O'Guinn states that kids shouldn't use cell phones in the tub when it is plugged in. How about never in the tub??? (I doubt you'll die from 4V DC, but dropping your ~$500 smart phone in the tub just might be worth discouraging kids from doing)

Tragic her parents didn't educate her on electricity and water not mixing, especially if you're in the water. What a loss of a young life.

Usb chargers for cell phones operate at a nominal 5v. Enough to feel if you were to put it on your tongue, but clearly not enough to deliver a lethal current through the human body, even when fully wet. Two things had to occur for this to be truly considered an accident, but some things may have been done that were pure negligence:

- The USB charger was faulty and was somehow able to short an AC line voltage to the usb cord, perhaps when the power supply was presented with a lower resistance load due to the wet environment. High quality OEM or aftermarket chargers are UL or CE approved and extremely unlikely to develop a fault like this. Likely a low quality non-name charger was being used. The phone involved seems to be a 2 year old S6 "edge plus", indicating it may have had the charger replaced or was supplied refurbished/used with non-OEM charger. She was also apparently using an extension cord with the charger, perhaps the charger was sitting on the floor and got wet causing the short. Or perhaps everything was wet, conducting a charge up the cord on the moisture, from the plug. Faulty chargers have supposedly killed before:

https://www.cnet.com/news/warning-over- ... ter-death/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

- There was no GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupt) on the bathroom outlet, or it was not working, or the outlet was too far away to need GFCI. Any bathrooms built or modified after 1975 should have these outlets, but they are not required in older construction, or someone may have done a DIY bathroom remodel without upgrading them. They trip at a .005 amp imbalance between hot and neutral, meaning that there is current flowing out of the circuit into ground. In this case, the ground is created by the wet person, through the bathwater, into the sewer piping. The 5 milliamps is enough to produce a slight shock, but is not fatal, and the GFCI cuts it in a fraction of a second. Clearly more current was passing, enough to be fatal and cause scorch marks. There may have been a GFCI and the extension cord may have been used on another outlet, bypassing it when it was tripped previously, which is clearly an error.

RIP. This was a tragic accident that could have been prevented by proper electrical safety practices, but it's not reasonable to expect a 14 year old girl (or most normal, non-technical people) to be particularly aware of this - it's not like she was reaching for a pop tart out of a toaster while sitting in the tub. That's why there are electrical codes. Tragic they didn't have a GFCI, or a good charger, but you can't really call this a Darwin award situation, IMHO, unless it turns out to be primarily caused by misuse of the extension cord or bypassing the GFCI.

This guy actually ran the extension cord from outside the bathroom, and had the charger plugged in, sitting on his chest, in the tub. That's actually real Darwin award material:

Well, one theory about the girl dying was that she used a power cord to commit suicide in the tub, and the family used the cell phone charger to cover it up. But I didn't post it because it was tasteless to.
