Wildcat Mountain closing......too cold to ski

Wildcat Mountain in New Hampshire is going to close Wednesday and Thursday. They say it's going to be too cold for guest and their employees.

I can't believe it, what a shame that a ski area closes because it's too cold. What a bunch of wusses, they should be celebrating the cold temps, embracing the bitter cold. They have lost their winter and mountain spirtis.

The passholders should make an uproar.

It's going to be 5 to -2 degrees in that notch. Nobody is going to ski that. Plus the wind that they get.

The season pass holders still have a place to go, Attitash.

Nobody is going to ski that. There going to loose money having the lifts and lodge running and make the employees suffer through it.

They were smart saving there money.

It's going to be just as cold at Cannon Mountain, they are open. I agree it wouldn't be a money maker for them, but that's no excuse to shut it down. Killington probably won't be making any money tomorrow, so should they close because it's going to be too cold for most people to ski, espcially people without a pass?

There no reason to keep it open.
Cannon is much more popular and is in a closer area to hotels and condominiums.

Wildcat gets more wind than cannon and all of the other places. Sure, places like Attitash, Cranmore and Loon may stay open, but that's because there so close to town and get more customers on the week days.

Killington isn't going to close because of it's popularity.

I skied at Sugarloaf with my son in January of 2009 in temps of between 25-35F below zero. The mountain did not close and in fact there where plenty of people out on the slopes. Closing for cold weather is dumb IMO.

Did Sugarloaf with actual temps of -22, wind chill at -80. They finally closed because the upper lifts, including the T-Bar, closed down due to mechanisms freezing up. I could see Wildcat with the same problem, sub zero temps and wind chills exceeding the level the equipment can handle. Also, more isolated than other areas so why keep the place open for the 10 people that showed up for the day.

There where a couple of hundred people out at Sugarloaf in 2009 with the -25F-35F temps, there where no mechanical issues, only folks enjoying skiing. It's was even colder at Sugarloaf in December of 1989 with temps below -40F and still, skiing went on. Dress properly and it's not an issue.

I think a lot of us have skied in -20 to -25 below. (Air temp) I know I have. All the lifts seemed to work fine. FYI wind chill does not affect machinery, only the air temp does. Wind chill affects the rate of cooling, but the ultimate temperature the machinery cools to is still the ambient temperature. Having driven a car at 40 below, I can tell you weird stuff started happening at sub 30 below. Grease froze. Rubber no longer flexed. Brittleness of some materials went through the roof. With all the rubber tires on a detach, I wonder what the lower limit is for them to operate.

My car was really hard to steer at first when we started driving it at -27F in 2009 in Stratton, Maine. Seat material was stiff and the car took a few cranks to start. Sugarloaf ran the Superquad, Spillway, Timberline and Whiffletree with no mechanical issues due to cold that day.

Stratton is also a town about 6 miles north of Sugarloaf. That's the Stratton I am talking about.
