Rescues Friday afternoon on Skye Peak Express lift

Post by HomeStretchFan »

Bear Mountain was opened back up on Friday... but the Skye Peak Express Lift was shut down before 1 p.m. -- and Killington operations had to rescue people from the lift.

Makes sense as to why snow report said skye peak quad would not reopen today. Said same thing about ramshead quad though not sure why......Anyone know what happened to either lifts and they were related?

Holy crap. Probably the overall tallest (off the ground) lift on the mountain.

Yeah, those last few towers are well above treeline.
Back when it was a fixed cable lift, we got stranded up there for more than an hour.
Couple folks got hypothermia that day. Looks like an easy but lengthy evac today.

This doesn't bode well for this weekend for full access on that pod.

Hard to tell from the pics, but do they just let the rope run over the cable when they lower people down, or is there something on it to reduce friction?

I spent some of this morning on Bear, but left around 11 because Lower Skyeburst was awful. Brown snow was quickly becoming just dirt. Lower Wildfire was not open because the bottom is essentially bare. Unless they move snow around tonight, it may not make a difference if Bear is open or not.

Went down Bear around 12pm (ironically, just before that lift failed).

Lower Wildfire was closed (dirt across the trail)

Lower Skyeburst looked like it normally does in April.

looks like a great job by mtn ops getting those folks down. damn that's high.

think a number lifts were hit by lightning in thursday's storm. perhaps that's what ailed the spq.

Evac ropes have line savers on them, metal pieces which rest on top of the haul ropes. The lines run through them so they don't get damaged by friction from the haul rope.

Sounds like you're spot on. WPTZ spoke with someone at the resort, said Thursday's lightning storm basically fried some components. Hopefully it does run this weekend. :-o

Also, fwiw, once management decides to commence an evac, ski patrol is in charge of the operation, not mountain ops.

Most mountains do also evac train lifties, ambassadors, instructors and others so they can assist patrol.

I was at Bear this morning and the Skypeak quad ran fine when I was on it. Glad I left before this happened. I was stopped for quite a while on Bear Quad and actually wondered if I would be lowered by rope.
