A Texas mother died after falling 20 feet out of a chairlift at a small Colorado ski resort.

The unidentified woman fell from the lift at Ski Granby Ranch Thursday morning along with her 12-year-old and 9-year-old daughters, who were both hospitalized.

One of the girls was treated and released by Friday morning, while the other was airlifted to a hospital in Denver.

The National Ski Areas Association said there were 12 deaths from chairlift malfunctions from 1973 through October, and three deaths from falls since 2004.

They don't mention whether the lift(s) have retaining bars or not. Many locals hate pulling the bar down and let you know it if riding the lift with them.

.. And as U know, for years, many western lifts, especially at small ski areas, didn't even have any safety bars.

The video of the chair showed a safety bar, it looked to be a detachable quad. An eyewitness said the chair jerked just before they fell off. Perhaps the safety bar was in the up position. A safety belt in a car doesn't help if it isn't buckled.

While all the new lifts in Colorado have safety bars, the locals rarely use them. And there are plenty of older lifts that don't have bars. The one I ride regularly without one when out there is the Pallavicini double. Can be a bit unnerving if it's windy and the chairs are swinging.

one of the "scarier" lifts i've ever ridden but some of my favorite terrain.

hope the girls are ok but absolutely tragic that they're now motherless.

Do all the new lifts in Colorado have them? I was at Loveland last year, and what appeared to be brand new fixed grip lifts (they were shiny silver) -- had no bars.

How could any lift, anywhere in the US not have safety bars.

Loveland doesn't. For any lift. This lift is one of the newest ones, installed in 2015 per Wikipedia.

Another older lift:

Two lifts cross each other... neither has safety bars.

A lawsuit or two will fix that; regardless of who wins. Insurance companies can be very persuasive.
