Looks like another long term bridge replacement starting soon.

Brattleboro bridge way behind schedule!

The first article is about the Rockingham bridge which is just north of exit 6. It shouldn't affect any Killington traffic unless they have a house in Woodstock or Queechee. Sugarbush and north will have to deal with it.

We were just wondering yesterday why that Brattleboro Bridge was STILL not completed. Thanks for the helpful info. and post.

So what we're estimating here is that the small $60 million project I-91 bridge started in 2013 and has a “no-excuse completion date” of June 27, 2017. Four years. The new $4 billion Tappan Zee bridge carrying 140,000 vehicles PER DAY will take the same amount of time of 4-5 years!!! Come on, VT DOT?!? WTF?

Meanwhile, the nation's largest current infrastructure project, the 3.1 mile New Tappan Zee Bridge with 419 foot main span towers, located over the Hudson River north of NYC estimated to cost $3.98 B started in 2013 with partial opening expected in 2017 and full opening targeted for 2018.

Somehow you have to imagine probable-2020 Presidential candidate (per press reports, not fake news) Governor Cuomo will not allow the Bridge to slip behind schedule or beyond budget. (We won't discuss possible infrastructure projects on the Southern border...)

The original Tappan Zee bridge is still fully open, correct? So no disruption to traffic flow and the new one is being built next to it. In VT the traffic has to be shifted to one of the old bridges, then the other one has to be torn down, a new bridge built in it's place. Then the traffic is shifted to the new bridge and the process is repeated. This draws out the schedule. If the road alignment could of been shifted this process could of been done faster, but this Vt after all...
I do not travel on the section of I 91, so was unaware this was north of the Chester exit.

4 Billion is almost the entire Vermont State Budget. Not sure we even have 140,000 vehicles in the whole state. We are a small state trying to get by. Sorry if it takes a little longer to get job done.

Ironically from the standpoint of this thread, the northbound traffic will flow over the new bridge in Brattleboro for the first time today according to the bridge website.

So this is the bridge north of Exit 6 crossing the Williams River?

There is another steel bridge just above Exit 5 that they were doing some work on. Hope it's the one north of this.

I can't take another down to one lane construction on I-91.

Big Bob, The VT way of doing this is to shift traffic to one old brdige, tear down the other side and then combine the 4 lanes onto one new bridge. Traffic remains on the old bridge until the new side with 4 lanes is completed.
Hope they expand the entrance ramp for the North Bound side as there is no room for acceleration when entering I-91 at exit 6.

That's basically what I said Doc. It sounds like the new bridge will be widened as it is functionally deficient also.

From the article:

VTrans has noted additional problems at the site including deteriorated concrete decks that are too narrow by today’s standards. The bridges’ steel trusses couldn’t support the heavier, wider concrete decks that are now required, Bonneau said.

And Reed and Reed out of Maine is an excellent bridge contractor, there are a lot of bridges in Maine! Second to Cianbro.

Looks like another highway project ripe for 'milking'.
Nutmeggers are accustomed to these I-91 delays.
This simply shifts the trouble zone to exit 6.
Isn't that the one wth no Northbound exit ?

That's still an easier commute than from NYC.
Pat Barnum called it.

Don't worry, the Connecticut River Bridges on I-89 are set to be replaced in the coming years too by NHDOT.

(Gonna give me a hell of a time getting to work  ) Though for K, this likley only affects NH, RI and eastern MA people.
