That guy looked really toasty on the Gong show. Made me laugh.

NEW YORK (AP) — Chuck Barris, whose game show empire included “The Dating Game,” ”The Newlywed Game” and that infamous factory of cheese, “The Gong Show,” has died. He was 87.

Barris died of natural causes Tuesday afternoon at his home in Palisades, New York, according to publicist Paul Shefrin, who announced the death on behalf of Barris’ family.

God finally hit the gong and Chuck was removed from the set.

Met him at the traveling Gong Show Road Show at the New Haven Coliseum "way back then". He was nutty even off stage. I was in the trio on the side of the stage that played all the intro/outro music, plus a bunch of the contestant songs. Had to watch all sorts of hand cues, expect anything and be ready to fake it with his half scripted planning. It was fun playing through that huge speaker array in the roof.

Got the impression that he just wanted to get in and out of the city, do the show and run. Did not attend the dress rehearsal. A manager handled everything from beginning to end, and the show went off fine. You just don't see live performing talent personalities like that much any more. Stand up comedy is alive & well, but very few get out of their cocoon with a show and an act.

Funny coincidence this morning. The NYSE opening bell was rung by a Hong Kong art firm whose stock was opening for trading on the exchange today. Instead of ringing the bell, they banged a ceremonial gong.

That show and others did him well, estimated net worth was 120 million.

He laughed all the way to the bank.

Murray Langston, the Unknown Comic.

Although he had a lot of comedy work under his belt before then (i.e. Laugh-In, Sonny And Cher), Murray Langston's career hit a critical mass when he appeared on the Gong Show. He needed the money and didn't want his friends to know, so he put a bag over his head, became "The Unknown Comic" and it took off, resulting in over 150 subsequent appearances on the show and a cult following.
