Report: FBI Investigating Bernie Sanders' Wife

It is being reported that the wife of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) is being investigated by the FBI.

According to the news outlet Seven Days, Sanders' wife, Jane O'Meara Sanders, is under investigation for obtaining a loan in 2010 to purchase a piece of land owned by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Burlington church for Burlington College, which she was the president of from 2004 to 2011. She has been accused of "inflating the number of fundraising commitments she had" in order to obtain the loan, as she had claimed that the college had $2.6 million in loans pledged; that number $676,000.

Burlington's default resulted in the church losing "between $1.6 million and $2 million" since it "financed a portion of the sale." Burlington itself officially shut down in May 2016 due to the massive amount of debt it was facing.

The FBI has been tight-lipped about the investigation, but Seven Days talked to people who had been involved with the college, including Carol Moore, the last president of the college, who told the publication that the FBI had asked her, "Was there any collusion between Jane Sanders and the bank? Did she falsify records in order to get the loan from the bank?"

Jeff Weaver, who was Sanders' campaign manager, dismissed the allegations as a Republican hit job.

"In the middle of Bernie's presidential campaign, the vice-chair of the Vermont Republican Party asked for a federal investigation of Burlington College," Weaver told the Burlington Free Press in an email. "Jane has not been contacted by the FBI or any other authority and only knows as much as news reports indicate.

"Jane served as president of the college from 2004 to 2011. In the five years following her departure, the college experienced major turnovers in leadership, staff and its Board of Trustees."

Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign had compiled news stories regarding the allegations about O'Meara Sanders and the college.

Joe Cunningham writes at RedState that clearly the FBI was going to be an albatross around the Democrats' neck in 2016 even if Sanders had won, although Clinton's actions were far worse.

"The investigation seems very young right now, so there isn’t a whole lot that’s out there. But, the speculation and the evidence in the article linked above do not paint a good picture," writes Cunningham. "While it may be that she’s not guilty of anything other than being incompetent at her job at the college — also evidenced by the fact that they ousted her in 2011."
