I thought it was a Newfoundland breed that specializes in water rescues, was reading about them recently:

But it's actually an English Golden Retriever which also do water rescues.

Caught this on TV. Never under estimate the intelligence of a K9. Cool story. Golden retrievers are amazing dogs. I love mine everyday.

As wonderful this heart warming story is I'm not sure whether the dog was rescuing the deer more than retrieving game, which is what it was bred for. When the fawn hit land, the dog prevented it from running away. That's what they are bred to do. In fact, the fawn ended up running back into the water to escape the dog and had to be rescued by humans.
But as my boss tells me, never let the facts get in the way of a good story.
