Original Bear Lodge???

Post by iRock »

Found this Ski Magazine article from 1980...a very good read...

https://books.google.com/books?id=IVD2H ... on&f=false

It's crazy how the two pictures they chose...looking down at the parking lot from the top of OL, and looking up at OL from the parking lot...are two of the most commonly photographed views of Bear 37 years later.

What surprised me though was the base lodge...it looks nothing like the lodge there now. It looks smaller and is only one story. Obviously some major renovations took place early in the Bear years. Anybody know anything? When/why? I thought that lodge had remained untouched from its construction int he late 70s....guess I'm wrong.

SPOT on.... but...a few details bear(!) mention: I was in college two hours south of K...loaded my 73 Satellite Sebring with three roomies...and up we came. The access road....and I use the term loosely?...was unpaved. I DID manage...to not only overheat my old infirmed radiator climbing up....but broke both 318 motor mounts jouncing along. My beloved Rossi Sunbirds...175's....werent the issue. Straps....WERE. I'm grateful to this very day no actual pics were taken....moguls actually WERE the size of VW bugs....as I'm 6'2.....and while in the depths of two of those massive puppies?..one of the roomies manage a kicker off a trailing mogul.....and cleared my head without hitting. No lie......

Keep in mind they started out with one triple at Bear and had 3 quads after a few years. It looks like they expanded on the original lodge and the parking.

Original lodge was 2 stories. basically from the trophy case toward the SPQ without the rear kitchen addition. It was small!

DOPE! I never said that it wasn't.
In 1979, Killington developed its 8th "complete ski area" and fifth "interconnected mountain" with Bear Mountain. A new Yan 2,858 foot long by 1,184 foot vertical triple chairlift was installed on the Outer Limits trail. The new peak, as well as related developments, would see Killington's trail count boost from 60 to 72 trails from 1978-79 to 1979-80.

Consisting of over 1,000 vertical feet of expert terrain, Bear Mountain quickly became a popular place for bump skiers. The Outer Limits lift line trail would become the site of the first annual Bear Mountain Mogul Challenge in the spring of 1980.

Thanks in part to the development of the Sunrise complex, Bear Mountain saw increased use as the early 80s progressed. As part of a $5 million project in 1983, the Devil's Fiddle Quad was installed at Bear Mountain, making it Killington's first quad chairlift

The Bear Mountain area grew to house three quads for the 1984-85 season, as the Bear Mountain Triple was upgraded to a quad and the Skye Pead Quad installed

As per Yiddle on da fiddle: "The access road....and I use the term loosely?...was unpaved." Yeah, I remember driving up that road...it was wet mud and almost impassable. When we arrived, we saw OL trail and the "little" lodge and the triple. Little did we know that Northeast Passage followed and that the Bear Mountain Mogul Challenge would be the ski area party of the year for the East - perhaps the Party of the Year for the entire industry.
