Is Ted Cruz a "Natural Born Citizen" of the United States?

Post by Bubba »

Interesting debate, one which may now have to be decided.

"The Circuit Court of Cook County in Chicago has agreed to hear a lawsuit on Sen. Ted Cruz's eligibility for president..."

I can see where this is going down the Clinton road of definitions, ie what does "Natural born" mean.

My take: If you are a citizen at birth, regardless of where that birth occurred, you are natural born. It doesn't matter if you have dual citizenship, and it doesn't matter where you lived for part of your life. The electorate can judge if you are a good candidate, and vote for you or not, but eligibility for serving the office is determined by citizenship at birth.

Immigrants are not eligible. Green card holders are not eligible. Naturalized citizens are not eligible.

The courts will have to decide this one.

Depends on interpretation of the Constitution. Does it specify being born on US soil (or protectorate) or does it leave a loose interpretation of being born to an American Citizen, his mother. Time will tell, but he would have been better off just calling it quits when the question arose.
