FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe stepping down

UPDATE:
Update: According to Fox News and CBS News's Pat Milton just answered the question of why McCabe stepped down Monday when he would become eligible for his full pension benefits n March: McCabe was reportedly forced to step down. According to Fox News, McCabe was "removed" from his post as deputy director, "leaving the bureau after months of conflict-of-interest complaints from Republicans including President Trump."

In both cases, his early departure suggests that he was forced out.

According to Kurtz, Preibus asked if the FBI could release a statement denying the report’s veracity. The former FBI Deputy Dirctor said he would have to think about it, later telling Preibus that there was nothing he could do. Later, Comey called to relay the same message, instead offering to provide Senate Intelligence Committee investigators with evidence that would discredit the report.

“You’ll never guess what happened next,” writes The Federalist‘s Mollie Hemingway.

Now, a week later, CNN was airing a breaking news story naming Priebus. According to ‘multiple U.S. officials,’ the network said, ‘the FBI rejected a White House request to publicly knock down media reports about communications between Donald Trump’s associates and Russians known to U.S. intelligence.’

Priebus was stunned by the implication that he was pressuring law enforcement. Had he been set up? Why was the FBI leaking this information when one of its top officials had initiated the conversation?

CNN’s story was authored by Sciutto, Perez, Shimon Prokupecz, Manu Raju, and Brown. Raju is the reporter who later messed up a massive Russia-collusion story by not verifying underlying details in any serious way. He has not explained how he got the story wrong or done anything to regain credibility lost by running a blatantly false story.

The story is sourced to a “U.S. law enforcement official” who seems to know an awful lot about McCabe (e.g. “A law enforcement official says McCabe didn’t discuss aspects of the case but wouldn’t say exactly what McCabe told Priebus.”)

While Hemingway only strongly suggests McCabe leaked details of the meeting he initiated with Preibus to the press, the website’s co-founder, Sean Davis, appears certain the top FBI official set the whole ordeal up.

“McCabe told Priebus a big NYT story alleging treasonous collusion was false. Priebus asked if he could make that public. McCabe then leaked that Priebus was interfering with the FBI, tweeted Davis Monday.

As previously reported by Business Insider, then-Director James Comey testified to Senate Intelligence Committee last June that The New York Times piece was “not true.”

When asked by Senator Jim Risch (R-ID) whether the report was true or not, Comey replied, “In the main, it was not true. And again, all of you know this. Maybe the American people don’t. The challenge, and I’m not picking on reporters about writing stories about classified information, is the people talking about it often don’t really know what’s going on, and those of us who know what’s going on are not talking about it. And we don’t call the press to say, ‘hey, you got that thing wrong about the sensitive topic.’ We have to leave it there.”

Last week, the Daily Beast reported former FBI Director James Comey, bureau Deputy Director Andrew McCabe and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein are officially named in the “shocking” FISA abuse memo.

According to the Washington Post, McCabe intends to resign from the FBI once he is eligible for full pension benefits in March.

House Committee Expected To Vote 'Yes' To #ReleaseTheMemo This Afternoon, Report

The House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence is expected, according to Fox News, to take a vote Monday afternoon on whether to release a classified memo that top congressional Republicans say details government surveillance abuses -- and has emerged at the center of a power struggle in Washington.

Those who have seen the document suggest it reveals what role the unverified anti-Trump "dossier" played in the application for a surveillance warrant on at least one President Trump associate.

Fox News reports that the committee, with 13 Republican and nine Democratic members, is expected to vote yes.

While the White House seems to favor the memo's release, the Justice Department has pushed back hard.

Sources told Fox News' Catherine Herridge that FBI Director Christopher Wray went to the Capitol on Sunday to view the four-page memo.

According to one source, Wray was asked to point out inaccuracies or other issues with the wording -- and said he would need “his people to take a look at it.” The source said the review is ongoing.

But various members on the panel are demanding its release:

South Carolina GOP Rep. Trey Gowdy, who helped write the four-page memo, said Sunday he wants it made public.

“If you ... want to know whether or not the dossier was used in court proceedings, whether or not it was vetted before it was used... If you are interested in who paid for the dossier ... then, yes, you'll want the memo to come out,” Gowdy told “Fox News Sunday.”

And House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., said Sunday on NBC's 'Meet the Press'.

“Having read this memo, I think it would be appropriate that the public has full view,”

California Rep. Adam Schiff, the top Democrat on the House intelligence committee, said last week that committee Democrats will release their own memo, claiming the Republicans’ document “represents another effort to distract from the Russia probe and … seeks to selectively and misleadingly characterize classified information in an effort to protect the president at any cost.”
Fox News also points out that The DOJ has warned that releasing the memo without a proper review would be "reckless."

If the Committee votes to release the memo, the president would then decide whether he has any objections before release.

meanwhile I assume coydog is fabricating yet another fantastical defense...

Economy to grow at 5.4% rate in first quarter, Atlanta Fed tracker shows
The Atlanta Fed updated its rolling look at the U.S. economy, projecting that GDP would grow 5.4 percent in the first quarter.
If the forecast holds, it would be the strongest quarter since the economic recovery began and would more than double the typical annualized growth during the period.
