BOSTON, MA (WGGB/WSHM) -
BOSTON (AP) - Boston approved a plan Thursday to change the name of Yawkey Way, the street outside Fenway Park named in honor of a former Red Sox owner some have said was racist.

The city's Public Improvement Commission unanimously approved a proposal by current Red Sox ownership to call the stretch of roadway Jersey Street, which it was originally called before being changed in 1977 to honor Tom Yawkey a year after he died.

The team filed a petition with the commission in February to change the name as part of a mission to "reinforce that Fenway Park is inclusive and welcoming to all." Yawkey Way is the street Fenway Park is on.
yeah cuz up til now people of color were afraid to even play for the team let alone go to a game...

You might ask Jim Rice and some other black Red Sox players in recent history about Yawkey's and Boston's racism.

was there really a need to ""reinforce that Fenway Park is inclusive and welcoming to all."? I hardly think so...

as far as yawkey or the the red sox really don;t care at all one way or the other...it's the pretense that somehow anyone felt unwelcome at fenway for any reason let alone because the st was named yawkey way...it's ridiculous... absolutely goddamn fvcking ridiculous...

the only thing that makes one unwelcome there is insufficient funds to buy a ticket...

interesting story on the radio today about the names of almost all of the major streets in Boston.

They are all named after people who themselves or their families were involved in the slave trade.

Wonder when those names will be changed.

Probably never, and it doesn't matter. This was requested by the Red Sox, the same team that I believe requested the change to Yawkey Way. Are any of those other streets named via that process?

The Red Sox don't own Yawkey Way/Jersey Street.

BTW, maybe you should look into who Jersey Street is named after.

The family of the Earl of Jersey was very, very active in the slave trade.

So all they did was substitute one "racist" for another.

The Yawkee foundation should take their $300 million of charitable efforts elsewhere.

pretty soon we'll be renaming the white mountains... I mean it's blatantly racist just being called "white" let alone naming individual mountains after former slave owners...yup it's THAT stupid....
