Wondering why they can't verbally autheticate the pilots identity before scrambling the 16's.

However with so many flights this would be really tough to manage... and eventually somebody is going to get it wrong.
Thanks for the mammaries! (.)(.)

You can say that about almost anything. Where do you draw the line?
At the rate we're going soon anytime a passenger farts they'll call out the
F16s.

Wasn't there so I don't know what went on, but this strikes me more as a cya move than anything else. An expensive cya to boot. Falcon's ain't cheap to operate and diversions cost airlines lots of money.
If this woman was a Terrorist and crashed the plane into the Sears tower, I'm sure you'd be posting here questioning why the F-16's weren't scrambled.

Farting? Probably not, but obviously the flight attendants, air marshall(s) (were there any?), and pilots saw the need to land. I'll take the pilots decision on the need to land and be escorted as reason enough.
You're completely missing the point. You can call anyone a terrorist for doing just about anything and get away with it. Does not mean that that's a smart thing to do.

I'm not so much complaining about the decision as much as the environment of fear we've created that causes otherwise reasonable people to overreact to anything that's out of the ordinary.
I understand that. I'm commenting on the notion that you feel we over react too often. If you and I were on a plane and I stood-up and screamed your a terrorist ... a lot of things would happen, but others around me would soon see you're not a threat and that I'm just out of my mind. At that point it's the pilots call if he needs to call DHS, TSA, or get F-16 to escort him/her to the tarmac.

If someone is suspicious I'll assume the flight attendants and pilot(s) will do what they feel is necessary. It's always better to err on the side of caution.

It's our duty to react to things out of the ordinary. The reason 9/11 happen was because people that saw things that were unusual didn't react.

Anyway ... I wasn't sure where to post this, but I got it from Scoble's blog. his wife is Iranian and went to school in Iran:
LayZ: you’re not making it up. My wife is Iranian and she tells me all about it. She never even knew that the holocaust existed before she came to America (they don’t teach that in schools in Iran).

Most of us have met Ty and know how shall we say "active " she is. Now that she's been out of work for awhile she keeping the old Dorkmeister pretty active and hence he may need the strap on to keep up, just a thought, maybe a disturbing one but a thought no less. Now try getting that picture out of your head.
