Ice Ski

Post by panelman01 »

Rather than read thru every ski review in ski or skiing... which rates
almost every ski reviewed as 4-5 stars. I am interested
in getting a set of new or used skis for ice. I am committed to a small
local hill 3-4 nights per week and sat's. This hill is our local HS racing
hill and the ice seems to suit them fine... My preference has always been
a softer ski - dynastar legend, salomon 1080, etc... and these just do not
have any edge grip. I dont have a lot of time ( or shops down this way )
to demo a multitude of skis. Any suggestions?
Going where the wind don't blow so strange. Maybe on some high cold mountain range.

My Volkyl Supersports handle ice really well but they are not too forgiving in the trees or on bumps.

Look for a recreational RACE ski. SL if you make lots of turns, GS if you want fast cruising. I love my Fishers, but you might try Atomic, Rossi, Vokle, so many others. If they are tuned, they are ice skates. I say recreational because usually they are a bit softer so you don't have to work so hard.

Curious Doc.... I can pick up quite a few used race skis down
this way, most only 1-2 years old, from the week night club
racers who all seem to upgrade to the newest on an
annual basis.... Lots of Fischer RC4's in SL and GS. Prices are
pretty good ( most around 1/3 of what they paid ).... Down
side concerns?

No downside unless they've been ground to nothing...

If you're not a racer then true race skis can be demanding thigh burners.
For example, I find the Volkl Race Tigers to be too much work to be enjoyable for everyday recreational skiing, but I like the still plenty stiff "recreational race ski" Volkl Tigershark 10 & 11s just fine.
Both fit the "ice skate" niche.
The AC50 is a wider example of this same "ex-racer all-mountain" philosophy.

No matter which way you wind up jumping, try before you buy!
Ask your friends on your local hill if you can try out some SL & GS skis before you shell out the dough.

They're also damned tough on your knees.

Sorry, but was at Sugarloaf for the week with no Wi-Fi at the condo and never went with a pc to the lodge.

Down Side to any Thoroughbred is they can throw you. Race Skis and good all mountain skis will carve nearly anything when up on edge, BUT, if you don't stay on top of them they will take you for a ride. In bumps, if you get caught sitting back give it up because you are going to accelerate rapidly. Get in the wrong position on the uphill ski and it will rail you into the woods quickly. You must be a strong skier when using them for fun.
