Where did all the young people go?

Postby TheAbominableSnowman » Tue May 01, 2012 4:27 pm

Where did all the young people go?

Over the years it has seemed that the ski house crowds age group is getting older and there are fewer and fewer ski house members in their 20s and pretty much no ski houses with people all in their 20s. with the exception of a few the scales crowd is mainly become mid-30s and up.

Why is this happening? and if it continues what will be the future of the ski house presents in Killington? what needs to be done to stop attracting younger crowds to come here and stay here. I know we see lots of them on the mountain but they all seem to leave and not stay in any hotels or spend money in the local shops and restaurants. what can the community do to bring back that younger crowd that will stay here and ski here on weekends for many years?

and please no obvious remarks like the economy is preventing them, even in this economy there are still younger people with money.

No clue where they all went, My ski house is the only one I know of in Killington that is all 20's with 1 member breaking 30.I believe this is because of costs as doing a share house is not cheap. Many of my friends in there 20's would love to do a ski house but simply just can't budget/afford it. Ski Pass plus house, food, drinks, equipment, tolls and gas from NYC add up quickly. An average season in K I spend at least 5K or more depending on my travels and how much gear I destroy.

They are too busy butt chugging, drinking hand sanitizer, going to craft beer fests, and trading rare beers over the internet....

I am just turning 29, and have had a ski house since I was 19.

A) The Great Pine: A quasi one bedroom with only a 5 gallon water heater. By the 1st RR crossing on Rt. 103. Must have been 300 sq.ft. I think we once fit 19 people in there and it was only $400 a share for the winter.

B) Shady Maple: Historic, surprised it is still standing. Still can't forget the epic NYE by the suspension bridge. I still have the Dead - Dancin' in the Streets stuck in my head.

C) Junior's 1 bedroom: Movin' on up; ski home is ridiculous, hard to live without it.

D) LadySlipper: A nice 3 bedroom, somewhat reminds me of the Shady.

Out of the original shareholders of the Great Pine, I believe only I am left. This year though as Barnibus said in our house only one person was 30, Mr. Mikey Balz.

Most people moved to Maryland when Fort Monmouth was closed. And GoBigorGoHome is a girl with an unnatural attachment to the Shady.

It's probably due to the economy....and skiersleft's presence.

Not sure about the 20 somethings, but over the years I'd say there was a 30%-60% turnover many years at various ski houses I was in. A lot of folks stopped coming up to K for various reasons. Some moved, some had kids, some went back to school, some came to meet someone and gave up, some just disappeared. All of those can happen mid 20's.

Skier visits 1 mil = lots of ski houses
Skier visits < 600 k = lots less

Back in the 70's the drinking age was 18. Now it is 21.
Back in the 70's and 80's and even 90's the police presence was nowhere like it is today.
Throw in the price of lift tickets today as well as gas and I think young people just pack up the SUV for the once a month or every couple of weeks trip.

You also forget that many of you made life decisions. Lots of ski club members start very active, taking trips and skiing every weekend. Suddenly they find themselves married, overworked, planning a family and buying a home, never to be seen again, until the kids are gone.

Some of them then lurch back to K-town, post trash on K-zone and selectively edit the history to talk about how great things were "in their time". Guess what today's 20s are gonna be posting about?
How there are no liftlines, good skiing and good crowds in the bars and how they wish that old guy would just get out of the way. The future is just ready to run you over and in more ways than one.
