New Bindings Advice / Suggestions

Post by OlympiaGirl »

Hey Kzoners! Since we are 2 months out (or so) from ski season I was hoping for some advice on new bindings. I have some brand new skis that I'll be using, and I want to get some something snazzy but practical for them. I've looked at Powder Mag's recommendations but I'm not sure what is right for me.

Up until now I have been on 147cm Line Shadow twin tips with Marker Squire bindings. I will now be on 156cm Volkl Kenjas. I don't want to take the bindings off the old skis, in order to keep them for early and late season skiing/ days I feel like pretending I can actually ski in the park.

Right now my skill level is Advanced (low level), and I'm looking to improve that over the next few years.

Any suggestions? Thank you in advance!

The Kenja's are a pretty substantial ski. I'd look at the high performance 12 or 13 din bindings:

http://www.evo.com/alpine-ski-bindings/ ... tail-1.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

http://www.evo.com/alpine-ski-bindings/ ... 015-95.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

http://www.evo.com/alpine-ski-bindings/ ... ck-red.jpg" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

There may be better deals elsewhere, but EVO has a 10% off code today "tenoffski".

Keep in mind, a binding mount at most shops around Killington will run you $40 to $60.

Just curious if my size would affect your thoughts on the high din - I'm 5 feet tall and about 105 #'s. Should I still going for 12-13 din bindings? Thank you!

highwaystar is an idiot...you need a quality binding but you'll never see a DIN setting anywhere near double digits...aspen east or northern ski works can give you solid advice and likely supply you with an appropriate binding at a fair price...

I have Salomon Z12 on both my Kenjas and Black Pearls and would recommend them.

As others have said a high DIN binding is not necessary. Especially since you are stating that you are low level advanced skier. I would be utterly shocked if they would be setting your din anywhere close to the 9-10 range.

You'll have to excuse madhatter. Aside from being a raving lunatic, his knowlege of ski equipment consists of knowing which direction to put his skis on......sometimes.

yet NO ONE agrees with you, NO ONE thinks the OP needs a 12+ DIN capability, and a simple google search is more than sufficient to prove you once again to be a complete imbecile, your stupid advice ruins nearly every equipment thread on this board... seriously you have absolutely no clue wtf you are talking about, the OP is 5 ft tall weighs 105 lbs and is a type 2-3 skier, an adult type 3+ skier would DIN around 6.5.

http://www.dinsetting.com/index.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

perhaps el homo's problem is related to this:

DIN Numbers — The New Macho Meter?

https://www.wildsnow.com/1428/ski-bindi ... -settings/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

in reality you don't want any more DIN ( setting) than is necessary to prevent unnecessary release in demanding conditions, any quality binding that has a max DIN high enough to accommodate you would be sufficient... For best results you want something light and durable, that fits your ski, at a price that won;t break the bank...Preseason sales start this weekend up here, bring yer ski's w you if yer coming up...

Clearly your size makes a difference, depending on what your needs are. I know two women skiing the 156cm Kenja who are low-advanced level, they are both considerably larger people than you. The Kenja is a beefy race construction midfat and is going to ski on the long side, and will benefit from precise input. Since you did not specify your size, I made a completely valid recommendation for a higher performance binding, which is very noticeably stiffer and more durable.

At your size, you calculate out to a 6 din setting, level III, assuming you are under 50 years old and have a 23 or 24 mondopoint boot. Claim a 110lb weight with a 22 mondo boot, and your din goes up to a 7.5 setting.

You will be fine on the 10 din binding. They are lighter, but certainly not as stiff. This is the conventional choice, and if you walk into any skis shop in the land, they will recommend for you a 10 din binding.

If you are very strong, athletic overall,ski fast and are improving rapidly, you should be looking at the 12 or 13 din options. I know 100lb women that ski 12 or 14 din bindings on a 9 setting, so it certainly is possible. You typically want to be in the middle 50% of a binding's din range, so someone selecting a 4-12 din binding (like the rossi fks 120) should have a din somewhere from 6 to 10.

Bindings are the most neglected and poorly understood part of ski equipment, being under-gunned on your bindings will hold back progression and otherwise inhibit better skiing. Expert skiing requires a precise connection of the boot to the ski. It's amazing the number of people skiing high end boots and skis with marginal Salomon Z10's.

Also consider you get extra steeze / street cred with a rossi FKS or look pivot turntable binding, they are a serious skier's binding:

http://www.alpineshopvt.com/rossignol-f ... Hwodol4Org" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Be sure to color match your bindings with your skis too. (seriously)

Please ignore HS. Seriously. He has no intentions of helping you or anyone else on this site. He will only get you hurt. Hit a reputable ski shop at Killington. There's dozens of them. If you hit them early before Columbus Day most will offer a discount. Shop them online and see if they have a binding for sale and you'll get them mounted for free most likely. Everybody is clearing out their 14-15 stock.

You don't even have releaseable bindings. :violin

By the way.........I'm BY FAR the most experienced and knowledgeable person on K-zone about ski equipment. I've worked in shops doing sales and service, I tune my own skis, mount my own bindings (without a jig), custom build and fit my own boots. I make equipment recommendations to people all the time with a near perfect success rate.
