Indeed, she won the 2nd run, I believe. But when is the last time she didn't win a race she finished? I think she won every race she started last year, and all wins with one DNF this year before this. Incredible!

GS is not her top race mode. She placed 4th or 6th at Killington and 4th the other day in Europe. She has won all but one SL she finished in, breaking her streak at 8 in a row.

Yes, sorry, wasn't clear. I was wondering when was the last time she didn't win a slalom race she finished. Her streak of 8 started when she came back from injury. I believe she had won all the races she competed in last year before that, but not sure, and couldn't easily find it.

I'm hoping she becomes strong in the speed events. Right now, she has a shot at the overall, but probably needs some speed points.

OK, I could easily find it, fis website has it. Interestingly, the last SL race she didn't win (besides the DNF this year) was also a 3rd at Flachau 2 yrs ago. Must not like that course!

Vonn needs to win the remaining speed races to take points away from Gut so Mikaela can win the overall.

Mikaela Shiffrin beaten after slow first run in night slalom
By Nick ZaccardiJan 10, 2017, 6:42 PM EST

Mikaela Shiffrin couldn’t overcome a slow (by her standards) first run and tied for third in a World Cup slalom in Flachau, Austria, on Tuesday night.

The youngest Olympic slalom champion was .78 of a second shy of Swedish winner Frida Hansdotter after two runs. Shiffrin won five of the first six World Cup slaloms this season going into Tuesday.

Shiffrin was in fifth place after the first run in Flachau, 1.38 seconds behind Hansdotter, then had the fastest second run by one tenth.

“I just didn’t ski fast enough,” Shiffrin said after her first run. “And that’s pretty much it.”

Olympic champions Lindsey Vonn and Julia Mancuso could race for the first time this season at the next World Cup stop in Altenmarkt-Zauchensee, Austria, this weekend, starting with a downhill training run Thursday.

Vonn, coming back from a broken arm suffered in a Nov. 11 training crash, last raced Feb. 28. Mancuso, who had November 2015 hip surgery, last raced March 7, 2015.

NBCSports.com/live and the NBC Sports app will live stream racing Saturday (downhill) and Sunday (super combined) mornings. Shiffrin said she definitely won’t be racing the downhill but may do the super combined, which is one super-G run and one slalom run.

On Tuesday, Shiffrin moved 365 points ahead in the standings for the World Cup overall title, the biggest annual prize in the sport, through 19 of a scheduled 37 races.

That lead, which is comfortable now, will be cut into significantly before February’s world championships in St. Moritz, Switzerland, and leading into the season-ending World Cup Finals in Aspen, Colo., in March.

That’s because the early season was weighed heavily with Shiffrin’s best events — slalom and giant slalom. Speed races of downhill and super-G make up the majority of the remaining schedule.

Defending World Cup overall champion Lara Gut is stronger in speed events and is the main threat to Shiffrin’s lead over the next two months. The Swiss Gut is in second place in the standings but arguably still the favorite for the overall title.

“One of my big goals that I want to accomplish is the overall,” Shiffrin, who could become the third U.S. woman to take the biggest annual prize in ski racing (Tamara McKinney, Vonn), said after her previous race Sunday, a slalom victory. “And I don’t know if it happens this year, but eventually that will be a big goal. … Right now, my focus is more world championships, but, eventually it will be more overall, probably.”

Fourth place from number 31. Lara Gut was injured and screaming in pain but I later heard she should be okay. Michaela has a decent lead in the overall.

Lara Gut tore her right ACL and meniscus today in a training run at the World Cup Championships in St. Moritz. She was airlited to a hospital.

Michaela is currently 180 points ahead of Guy and 440 points ahead of Sofia Goggia in the WC Overall standings.

ST. MORITZ, Switzerland - Mikaela Shiffrin was in a world of her own on Saturday, extending her unbeaten record in slalom gold medal events.

The 2014 Olympic champion won her specialist event at a third straight ski world championships, and by a huge margin of 1.64 seconds.

Still aged just 21, the American star was nerveless, ruthless and stylish, turning a first-run lead of 0.38 over the home fans’ favorite Wendy Holdener into a rout. Frida Hansdotter of Sweden was third, trailing by 1.75.

“It happened almost as perfect as it could have,” Shiffrin said. “That was the way I imagined myself skiing the course.”

How is her standing for overall in the World Cut? I understand Gut (sp?) was moving up and away with all the speed events.

Top overall does not even list Shiffrin. In a GS Shiffrin received the Silver overall GS. Forgot about Gut's injury. Mancuso and GOETSCHL tied for 1st in the GS overall title.

You must be looking at wrong list. Shiffrin is leading Gut by about 200 pts and Goggia by about 400 pts in overall. She is second in GS to Worley by 120 pts.
