Mike Pereira: Eagles were in illegal formation on trick play

Post by Dr. NO »

Could the Eagles out cheat the Pats? Outcome would probably show bad officiating.

One of the controversies to arise from the Super Bowl had to do with whether or not the Philadelphia Eagles were lined up in illegal formation on the “Philly Special” trick play that resulted in a touchdown pass to Nick Foles. One former official thinks they were in illegal formation.

NFL rules expert Mike Pereira, who serves as a TV analyst for FOX, said in an interview with Talk of Fame Network that the Eagles were lined up illegally.

On the play, Eagles receiver Alshon Jeffery was seen lined up about two yards behind the line of scrimmage. NFL rules require offenses to have seven players on the line of scrimmage for all plays, and Jeffery was considered one of their seven.

oh well, that's how it goes...trophy won't be going anywhere til next year now...woulda, coulda shoulda but unless ya do, ya didn;t...

IMO it's procedural not "cheating"...

I always prefer a tightly officiated game w the tone set right from the beginning....

people who say ya gotta let em play are really saying ya gotta let em break the rules...speed and finesse teams rely on forcing mistakes and intentional penalties ( holding, PI etc because they got beat) if those penalties aren't called then that allows holding and PI to negate speed and finesse... that gives a power team a huge advantage...

plenty of calls coulda changed the outcome of that game, but in the end if you wanna find the answers to most of your problems look for the nearest mirror...

the pats could have won that game, they didn't...game over...

Procedure != Cheating
There is no standard for how close a player must be to the line of scrimmage to count toward the seven. It's considered a judgment call, and the league told Pro Football Talk that the referees in the Super Bowl decided that Jeffery was close enough.
Cheating is Spygate.

Cheating is a formation that the Patriots did in that playoff game against the Ravens.

The refs totally blew that play which allowed the Patriots to go on to win that game.
The refs should have called a delay of game, at the minimum. I think they should have called a 15 yard un-sportsman-like conduct and loss of down penalty.

Each ref has specific duties to perform between plays. The Patriots cheated, preventing the refs from doing their job-should have been 15 yard penalty.

The NFL, once again, had to make a rule change to keep the Patriots from their dirty ways.

Depends on what "expert" you listen to.

I've read several who said it was legal.

No matter, it's over and done with.

You obviously have no clue as to what Spygate was.

There was no cheating.

All the Pats did was film from a prohibited location.

If they had filmed from the stands there would not be an issue.

You should stick to bragging about how your fore bearers slaughtered those Native Americans.

As I recalled it included women & children. If that ain't cheat, what is,

Oh and BTW, http://www.yourteamcheats.com

The Stealers have been caught 44 times, the Pats 26.

Al the teams were recording for years, everyone knew it. The League sent a letter to every team telling them to stop doing it, that the rule was going to be enforced. Every team stopped doing it except for one: Belichick and his staff. That is why The League punished them for cheating, pure and simple, they cheated.

Give him a break, he chopped off one letter.

Kind of like how his forebearers chopped up all those innocent NA women and children that he's so proud of bragging about.
