madhatter's 2018 garden thread
it's time to get seeds started if you haven't already ( we are waiting for them to arrive)...warming weather will have the soil thawed and ready in the greenhouse soon...greens and other cool weather crops will be ready to go to the greenhouse by mid march or sooner...
we had a bumper crop of brussel sprouts last fall...we kept them on the stalk in coolers (like ya bring camping, tailgating etc) kept the coolers in the greenhouse cover in some blankets during the sub zero temps earlier...just removed what's left from the stalk and put them in refrigeration...donated all the partially compromised ones to GIS's buddy nelson, who apparently loves them....
on the down side a bastard deer came into our yard one night and stripped virtually all the bark off one of our apple trees...about zero chance of that tree surviving....5 yrs of wasted effort there...
happy gardening...
eat more venison...

Can’t think about gardening until mid May. My mom always told me to wait until then to plant.

Same in Central MA. For the last 3 winters, the Robin's have been flocking. I see huge groups of 50 birds flying around the backyard. Seems new...SnoBrdr wrote:Robins year round in RIME2VTSkier wrote:Wow, on Feb 20th? What town/state might I ask?f.a.s.t. wrote:Robins in the back yard today.

Sounds like proof that global warming is real, Robin's no longer fly south for the winter!

Re: madhatter's 2018 garden thread
Yeah, that's really odd. Makes you wonder how they survive the -20 or worse cold snaps. We have been noticing them show up earlier and earlier every year up to the Northern Maine property in Central Aroostook. If you're seeing them in Candia, then I'd expect them here in 3-4 weeks or less.

What do robins do in winter?
Not all robins are the same: The vast majority of robins do move south in the winter. However, some stick around—and move around—in northern locations. Robins migrate more in response to food than to temperature: Fruit is the robin's winter food source.Feb 25, 2013

Yes, another NH rock wall; this one a sculpted one. A magnificent piece of work in the middle of a beautiful, huge hay field. Located on the historic Roberts Farm in Rollinsford, NH. This farm is/was continuously operated by the same family for over 300 years.
The snow is almost all gone from the Concord-Manchester area towards the coast, sad.

Re: madhatter's 2018 garden thread
I have potatoes and flowers.
Also, have rooted some pink willows which I will deliver to Mad Hatter in person: come hell or high water.
Still have K on the 2018 list.
Maybe bequeath some willows to the mean moderators???
They go for $90 and up, very rare. I guess you could ski on them down the road.
