What I mean by "space" is an area so big and sparely populated that they remove the tops of entire mountains... and it would go by mostly unnoticed were it not for the (totally warranted) anger of environmental groups. Imagine Killington Peak blasted off halfway up, the spoil pushed into the surrounding valleys. Take off from CBE you can see almost a dozen such sights on a clear day, but from the ground you'd be hard pressed to find them.
In light of this, a few ruts and eroded fireroads go by unnoticed. Where I rode ATV's there was less damage to the trails than on a heavily used mountain bike trail - simply because there was so much room and so little traffic.
However, that is a different world in different circumstances.
There is a thread in the politics forum complaining that military bases in the NE are being shutdown. Hell, there isn't even enough room up there to ride an ATV without pissing someone off - much less operate a squadron of tanks.
