The key is moderation. You can eat any kind of food you want as long as it is in moderation. Eating just carbs or just protein is not good for your body, besides the fact that it doesn't work. Depriving yourslef, of ceratin foods only makes dieting less enjoyable, and you will be right off of it come the holidays. Counting calories doesn't work wither. Some days you require more calories than others, not to mention you are just creating more stress on yourself.

Do yourselves a favor, instead of going on the South Beach Diet again, eat a balanced diet, and get a gym membership, and go for 30 mintues a day 4 days a week. That's called the natural diet.
