tuesday 2/7 report

Post by skiadikt »

bingo!! hit the jackpot today! blazing sunshine and comfortable temps. about as good as a non-pow day gets. 9-1 shift.

still not 100% so spent the first hour and change erasing corduroy on snowdon and the north ridge. once again good hard packed. highlights being our opener down highline and LEF both good in the sunshine. seeing is not overrated. skyeburst skied very well. upper claw a bit chunky and lower wildfire slickened quickly. cruise was cruise. bitter ok. a wind swept supe skied better than it looked. lower lark probably wrotd. dipped my toe into some bumps on low road.

business picked up when we hit the rope drop on ovation. HW nice & soft and user friendly. mid & lower generally good but the snow was rather damp and there were some slick spots. earned a repeat. dream HW another highlight w a nice chalky surface. 3-peat. rotd had to be vertigo under the guns. not often when it skis so well. another repeat.

in addition to ttb snowmaking on ovation & vertigo, they were still making snow in the dreamaker park. they also had the cats in there moving snow. the stash appears to be ready with the park crew putting on the final touches. here's 2 views of dream HW:

Hopefully enough positive feedback is received where those two remain on the menu in the future.

The benefit of DMHW is that it allows anyone heading to Cruise Control or Great Eastern to bypass some of the worst trail intersections on the mountain. If you're lapping Stage 2, it also just makes a great run combined with Cruise Control. I'm interested in seeing if it gets groomed regularly. It doesn't need it now, but it might if there are freeze thaw cycles. Hopefully Vertigo and Ovation are in good shape for the weekend, after the crappy storm coming on Thursday. They will need additional snowmaking or to be groomed.

they'll probably groom once it becomes unskiable. lots of huge whales all the way down. not a big fan of the whales because the backside is usually slick. these weren't so they were fun but in general when a trail gets huge whales, prefer it to get groomed to level it out so nice bump lines can form. just my take but whale bumps don't have good rhythm.

Does anyone know definitively how long it's been since they made snow on all of Vertigo (not just the snowcone at the crossover). Has to be at least 5 years.

Well, then you are very, very young - when Vertigo first opened, there was always snowmaking and grooming!

I believe 2018. Its been anemic for a long time before that though. When they first cut it did get a lot of snowmaking.

Hopefully it gets more consistent snowmaking in years to come. It helps reduce trail crowding and the Needle's lift typically has little to no line.

As with many slopes I wish they'd blow a base and let it bump after spreading the basep

It does not look like they are skimping on Ovation and Vertigo on the # of hours run either. Granted with the higher wet bulb they have to run longer to get the same amount that they were able to put out last week. I still thought they woulda dusted and moved on considering it's February. Beastly.
