Re: Rickety old defunct lifts.
In the late 1970s there was an old wooden T-bar at Pico, the location of which I can’t recall. The wood was in such bad shape that it actually snapped and broke while my ex wife and I were taking it uphill.

Should we rename this thread to, “How old are you?”
Never argue with idiots. They will bring you down to their level, then overwhelm you with their experience.

Snowdon triple
Re: Rickety old defunct lifts.
Funny thing is that isn't even the oldest chairlift at Killington/pico.
The bonanza beginer lift is 1965, then outpost 1969, then knomes knoll 1971.
All those predate the snowdon triple of 1973

I know they're not defunct, but the oldest chairs I've ridden I believe are the sterling and Madonna 1 at Smugglers notch.
Those chairs probably predate most defunct chairs by at least yen yrs.

Re: Rickety old defunct lifts.
One that I forgot was the Wildcat chair at Alta. This was like sitting on a 2X4 with nothing to hold on to. I also forgot the Big Spruce double.

Impressive list. Incredible how far lift technology has come, modern lifts today are amazing machines especially compared to what they used to be.G-smashed wrote: ↑May 8th, '24, 12:39 The Superstar chair thread inspired this. The converted Handle-Tow J-Bar at Black Mountain (NH)
Pat's Peak Summit Double
Tenney Hornet Double (how did they get that going again?)
But my final answer is:
The T-Bar at Veteran's Memorial Ski Area in Franklin, NH
-Apparently it was originally installed at Sunapee in 1953. When I skied at Veteran's a few years ago an old-timer was teaching a teenager how to run it, which involved using a stick to reach across the control box to hold down a safety button, and climbing a ladder to try to remove a T that had slid down the line only to not be able to unscrew it and just leaving it as-is with two T's on top of eachother. Un-sarcastically, great place to ski!

Re: Rickety old defunct lifts.
Some of the defunct Hunter lifts were definitely pretty worn out by the time they were removed.
The A lift to the summit is certainly a candidate.
I have a chair from the Z lift. That lift was really falling apart when it was replaced by the Zephyr.
The current mid-mountain lift (D) is very old. It was converted from a triple to a double only a few years ago. Offhand, I can't think of any other triples converted to doubles.
But the winner at Hunter is the E lift double over at the novice area, Hunter East (formerly Hunter One).
Installed in 1968, it qualifies as defunct as of about a month ago.

As far as lifts still in operation not at K or Pico, definitely Madonna 1 at Smuggs.
