I'm not Steve, but have skied mammoth many times.SkiDork wrote:Steve, or any other Mammoth knowledgeable folks...
Whats the dealio with volcanic vents in that area?
BTW - very sad news...
May they rest in peace, killed while doing a noble job... :-(
Sad news indeed.
Mammoth has several volcanic vents on slope. The vents are roped of with bamboo stakes and typical rope. The largest vent is near the mid mountain lodge where the first stage of the summit gondola unloads. The area near the vent smells strongly of hydrogen sulfide, which if you aren't sure what that smells like think berthing compartment on a ship or submarine after chili night. There are hot springs in the area too off of 395. The whole region is a volcanic caldera.
And they're always active?Talisman wrote:I'm not Steve, but have skied mammoth many times.SkiDork wrote:Steve, or any other Mammoth knowledgeable folks...

There has always been gas venting from the fissures when I have neem to the mountain. The smell is concentrated in the immediate area of the vent. I could see how duirng heavy snow you could ski over the stakes and ropes.SkiDork wrote:Talisman wrote:SkiDork wrote: And they're always active?
This is a freak accident.
it's a nasty (but quick) death...Steve wrote:wow, I'm surprised to hear this..Talisman wrote:The smell is concentrated in the immediate area of the vent.
never noticed or smelled anythign in about 10 days of skiing at mammoth. And I always seems to ski by the Gondi midstation..
I took a helicopter tour on the Hawaiian Big Island - those volcanic vents look to be freaking hot! (To say the least)....
I remember saying to myself "I hope the chopper doesn't go down right now (as we were circling overhead)"
The biggest vent I am aware of is between the gondola mid station and the Coyote trail.Steve wrote:wow, I'm surprised to hear this..Talisman wrote:The smell is concentrated in the immediate area of the vent.
