Min Wage Hike on the way

Post by XtremeJibber2001 »

Do you think this is a good move?

Does this provide motivation for those on lower echelons to work harder and try for better paying jobs ... or does this merely increase the poor's reliance on the gov't?

For the minimum wage earner it means nada. For the Union wienie it means he will get a bigger raise to go higher above it. For the consumer it means higher prices for BS services such as McDonalds and such.

BTW, most states that have high indusrial economies already have minimum wages at least $1.00 over the projected fed rate.

It is an ENTRY level wage, not a survival wage. It is for KIDS and others that are not supporting families. Block out the lying BS and look at reality.

As with most things the government gets involved with that should be left to the private sector minimum wage hikes hurt the group that it intend on helping.

The most feared 9 words in the world.

"I'm from the government and I here to help"

In the classic textbook analysis, a minimum wage law reduces employment by raising the costs of doing business. Yet Kahn and Lang found little evidence that minimum wage laws significantly reduce employment in their sample. What they did find was that a higher minimum wage encouraged what one employer called "better kids" to apply for jobs, reducing the benefit of the wage increase to unskilled workers or even making them worse off. "We found that a higher minimum wage shifts employment from adults to teenagers," says Lang. "And in terms of public policy, a simple increase in employment figures isn't as important as which groups benefit from the increase."

This study disputes the notion that minimum
wage employees are dependent on government
policies to receive wage increases. Every
day, minimum wage employees receive raises
based on their hard work and increased skill
levels. Nearly two-thirds receive a raise within
a year of starting employment. These wage
increases far outpace those of employees earning
above the minimum. Furthermore, minimum
wage employees over the last five years—
a time period without a minimum wage hike—
have experienced increasingly larger pay
increases and higher exit rates from minimum
wage employment.
Examining who rises above the minimum
wage reveals that skill level is an important
factor in determining wage rates. More educated
and more dedicated employees are most
likely to receive wage increases. In addition,
increasing the minimum wage relative to the
wages of young high school graduates (more
skilled competitors for entry-level jobs)
decreases the probability that minimum wage
employees will receive wage increases.
Overall, the authors find that minimum
wage employees depend on skill level and
work effort—and not government assistance—
to increase their wages.
Cogito, ergo sum

Sometimes it is that simple.

too bad it won't pass.

senate republicans loaded the bill with tax cuts that will add to the exploding federal deficit.

the house passed a clean version. they won't go along with the senate version.

Add to exploding deficit? Maybe you should check out the government reports on income from taxes. Since they reduced the tax rate, the economy has gone up and, like the Reagan years, so has government revenue. Unfortunately we keep spending more.

You also missed the memo from the Democrats which stated that Republicans would be blocked from introducing or adding to any bill on the floor. Yep, BiPartisan politics per usual.

You always seem to be blaming people with money for everything. Why do you have such feelings of inadequacy when it comes to money?

ARRGH!

I cannot stand to let this (nondeliberate, I hope) misinformation stand -- esepcially now that it has been posted twice in less than two weeks.

The minimun wage as now proposed is to rise in incremental stages.

20 States currently have a minimun wage below the first stage wage of $5.85, which would be implemented on 11 March 2007.

22 more States (plus the District of Columbia) currently have a minimun wage below the final stage minimun wage of $7.25, which would be implemented by 11 March 2009.

Exactly 8 states have a minimun wage over $7.25:

California - $7.50
Connecticut - $7.65
Hawaii - $7.25
Mass. - $7.50
Oregon - $7.80
Rhode Island - $7.40
Vermont - $7.53
Washington - $7.93

I am unclear which of these 8 states -- none of which are located in the "rust belt" -- are among those with "high industrial economies" but unless I missed something while out there, the two with the highest minimun wage certainly are not.

(It is true, however, that most of the states I would want to ski in have a minimun wage above $5.85. :)

hey... It's what I do... Even if I don't really agree with something I still post it just to rile up the right leaning masses... I have no problems with cash.. But I generally don't speak for myself in these types of debates...

But there is a feeling in this country that the seperation in classes is getting larger... And the "middle class" is eroding...
