This prevents you from getting scanned and then giving your pass to someone else in line. Makes sense but I had no idea that was programmed into the scanners.
pretty sure you were standing right next to me when you asked them he then demonstrated the "crash" sound it makes when he tries to scan again?

yep. it made the crash sound when he attempted to scan a second time

Rusty and I tried this in France when he switched jackets and forgot his RFID ticket in his room. We had skied down from the hotel to a lower lift, when he realized his mistake. He tried to sneak by the gates, but the lifty was watching him and shoed him off. After loading the chair, I dropped my pass down to Rusty below on the trail below me. He skated over to the gate and the system prevented his access. The lifty chased him away again while yelling and shaking his fist in the air. In a French accent, "YOU SIR ARE SCAVENGER!". Still use that line...8 years later.

Rusty skied down to the next chair with my pass and ascended to the same saddle, to party down at La Folie Douce - the mid-mountain discotech. Fun stuff. Ski run off my life that trip.

Having just returned from Summit County Co, here's some thoughts on the RFID systems at the Vail Resorts and the new one at Copper.

Vail Resorts uses handheld scanners, not gates. They work very well and are fast. Picture of passholder pops up on the screen as well as other data. Heard them say "happy birthday!" a couple of times. I never failed to get scanned at a lower lift. All in all, very efficient.

The Copper "gate" system worked OK, though I had to swing my body toward the sensor on the American Flyer gates on one entry when it didn't detect the pass in my jacket pocket. There is one screen that is monitored by an employee for the entire row of gates. Don't see how that will help much with preventing someone using another's pass. I heard that there were lots of problems early on, but the system seemed to work fine when I was there. That included Sunday of the Presidents weekend.

Copper has only four entry points (six lifts, but really just three main ones - Super Bee, American Eagle, American Flyer). Much easier to cover this with gates than with the number of entry points and lifts that Killington has.

I was just thinking of posting my RFID experience this past week while in Utah. Thanks Jim for the reminder.

Park City Mountain also has the hand held scanners, which seemed to work pretty well. Using their epic app or whatever it is called it looks like I got scanned 5 times but took over a dozen runs that day. There were just more people trying to go up the lift than the person scanning could keep up with.

Solitude and Brighton had the “gates” that open up when you walk up to the lift. The primary issue i saw at both places was with kids whose jackets were not tall enough to set off the sensor.

At Brighton i did see a few times where one attendant would have an iPad like screen which may have shown photos of passholders. I did not see any evidence of anyone double checking passes at Solitude. At either place it seemed it would be pretty easy for one to use someone else’s pass.

The one thing i did notice was that if there was not an attendant in the line organizing groups, the RFID system did nothing to alleviate the issue of empty chairs going up. This was particularly frustrating at Park City where the lift lines literally looked like Disneyland.

I’m not convinced that either system would help lift line organization or prevent theft of services any more than Killington / Picos scanner system.

Like it has for the past 24 years, the RFID system (gates / turnstiles at all lower lifts) worked perfectly all week in Austria.

I know they have it programmed so that you cannot go through and toss your pass back to someone else. I guess it won't allow that pass to get on that lift until a certain amount of time has expired.
Goes to show, you don't never know
Watch each card you play, and play it slow
Don't you let that deal go down
Don't you let that deal go down

Looks like its going down no matter what I do !!!

The process is called Anti-Passback. All access control systems have it. In this situation, I would imagine there is a time component tied to the rule. Other systems require the badge to exit they controlled area via an exit scan. There are more advanced systems that use distance and time checks so clone cards cannot be used. I would imagine these rules are already in play when using the barcode scanning systems.

Great week at Val D'lsere Club Med.

Our guide took us to freshies every day.

There lifts and RFID were amazing. Lost of trains through tunnels. Not one old lift.

I'll have to post some pics on FB. For now this video sums up my week.

I told you it would snow here if I left. Show me the goods this weekend!
