Years past the Yanks would "fleece " other teams with one sided trades at the trade deadline so that teams in a smaller market could cut costs by getting rid of the only high priced and good player on the roster. This added player in turn would give the Yanks just enough to be the last one standing at the bell ! You remember , Trades like Danny Cater for Sparkey Lyle.....
But in todays world you can no longer just BUY YOUR WAY to the top. because the Yanks are currently the HIGHEST PAYROLL in the AMERICAN LEAGUE at $227,854,349 and they are the only American League team currently over the $200 million mark followed closely by the Red Sox at $199,525,500 and this Yankee payroll has not equaled performance on the field but the high payroll limits trade possibilities.
Ironically the last time this type of fleece went down it was the Red Sox who fleeced the LA Dodgers in the Crawford/Gonzalez for whomever trade that let the Sox clear payroll and get what they needed on their way to a World Series win.
Today more owners know how to play the game and you don't see these kind of moves, PLUS back in those days STEROIDS were not tested like today so the player coming over could "juice up " and carry the team at the end of a long season. But it's a different world today at least in the REAL WORLD. So I think you can forget about Deja Vu .

Its all going to change down the road as you're going to see a SALARY CAP and a SALARY BASE-ment meaning owners MUST all spend the same amount at the top and bottom to make all teams competitive on a equal playing field like in other sports. No way the current structure lasts 20 years. but I don't get into prognostications....so
