Is it too early to start talking about AL MVP and Mookie Betts in the same sentence ? As of yesterday ........
Betts ranks second in hits (154), tied for second in doubles (34), third in runs (91), fourth in slugging (.561) and WAR (6.1), tied for fourth in triples (5), tied for fifth in RBIs (84) and steals (18), eighth in OPS (.914) and tied for ninth in home runs (26). He also leads the league in at-bats (492) and has played all but 48 innings this season. He's also made some dazzling defensive plays, both throwing out runners and robbing them of extra base hits and home runs !

Don't they usually give the MVP to the guy who's in
first in all those categories?

Nah...these days they give out trophies just for showing up.

Tomic. the answer to your question is Yes.
Altuve still ranks higher.
.. and, as you know ..
MVP isn't what Bogaerts, Betts and Ortiz are in quest of.

No. They're sharing Gronk and Mookies stuff. A-Rods stuff is nowhere near as strong (and the Boston stuff it's only a T ride away for them....)

Sorry to interrupt you needle addicts, but Mookie just hit another one
Nice little 3 run shot in Camden Yards, which looks devoid of Oriole fans.
45 games remain .. Stay tuned.

UPDATE : Mookie just hit ANOTHER HR, this a 2 run shot......... in a 5-2 victory in Baltimore and Mookie has all 5 RBI's ... So you see Junior and Bubba not ending first in EVERY category isn't the deal breaker it's just being the most valuable player in turning games into WINS with a combination of offense and defense : Some see the glass as half empty while others see it as half full ......
....... carry on !
Another note : In the five games Betts has played on the road against the Orioles this season in Baltimore , he's mashed seven home runs. The three multi homer games he has in Baltimore this season are more than even any Oriole has had in 2016. He say's he sees the ball really well there !

He crushed both of those balls
Baltimore is scared to death of the Mook's throwing arm
Held a runner at third on a ball hit to Betts.
They must think he's Dewey Evans.

MVP does not mean the actual most valuable player won it as the NL proved in 87 by giving a player, Andre Dawson, of a last place team the award.
I bet they could have finished last without him.
