Superstar always ends up with a distinctive "S" at the bottom. Is this by design?

Maybe Mtn Ops will tweak it into a "P" this year since wasn't the "S" area suddenly renamed Preston's Pitch for the World Cup Races??

STUPID QUESTION AND POST !

It is the contour of the terrain and until they pump more snow in that area OR blast it to be more even, it will remain the "S".

waste of band width.

You don't think the position of the chair comes into play?

I believe the chair is the problem. They need to maintain a required clearance from terrain to lift. Cascade , Rime and crossover to Northridge under slowdon triple are examples. Too much trafic on SS. They can't bamboo x it in that choke point. Cut some trees. Add culverts. Correct the fall line. Stay out of the lift path. Epic spring bump lines should follow gravity.

The Doc is right its the terrain. Do the leave it alone, because it looks cool, when a Giant S forms on the premier Late Spring Trail in the Northeast? Who knows, but it is kind of cool. Although it does usually signify that the end is drawing near.

Freeski has a point. The "S" is intentional, made by the snowmakers. The "S" stands for snowmakers, aka the Snowmakers Glacier.

Are any of you really serious you believe it's anything other than the terrain? There's been some (close to) season ending days (warm temps and/or fog) where you can watch the change during one ski day.

Look at the location of the fixed guns at the bottom, how far off to the side. Now look at the fixed guns above tower 5. They only bring the air hogs in about 30 feet from the fixed guns. You never see the guns stretched out halfway across the trail.

Did anyone ever see the East line at the bottom in operation? I didn't. There certainly is no build there.

The snow gun placement alone gives a lateral shift halfway down the lower (urp) headwall. The underlying terrain, a huge mounded waterbar coming out from the East side, does the rest.

:cool Blessed are those that have the imagination and courage to believe in the "S". :cool
For they know the secret of the mountain:. The "S" is intentional

Now that I reread your original question, and thought about that waterbar, I like the thought of the "S" being intentional! (I could see how maybe originally it "kind of looked like an "S", and then Mt Op's alter/perfected the "S"")...glad I hadn't voted yet, and am looking forward to reading other peoples opinion's...especially since I gave up on reading the "car idling thread" a dozen or so pages ago.

In addition to the Snowmakers, it is also the intent of the Snow Gods.

You can see the underlaying features that make up the S from the lift shot, First run the last day was top to bottom coverage. Last run was more mud than snow on lower Sup with the sublimation of the snow quite visible in the background.

I understand they don't want to line up the hoses on the skiers left side and blow snow at the chair - butt - wouldn't the snow last alot longer if the pile were on that side of the trail? That line skis a whole lot better than skier's right.

I think the whole ski till June thing on the snow cone is a little stupid anyway. Waste of energy and money.

I'd rather ski 4 trails in the canyon till the end of April....
