Get ready to hit the slopes in Connecticut any time of year, regardless of the season.

Powder Ridge Mountain Park and Resort in Middlefield CT. is set to open a year-round “snow” park on Saturday, August 5.

The ski resort said its 365 Synthetic Snow Park will feature a 500-foot run for skiing and snowboarding, as well as two tubing lanes.

“Skiing 365 days a year has been happening all over Europe for many years,” said Sean Hayes, CEO of Powder Ridge in a release announcing the park’s opening. “It is made possible by a high-tech version of ‘artificial turf.’”

Powder Ridge said it partnered with Swiss company 365 Synthetic Snow by Yiippi to create what will become the first synthetic snow park in the Northeast.

“The large amount of space between the (plastic polymer) ‘fingers’ provides more air flow than any other synthetic snow manufacturer,” said Hans Peter Koehle, managing director of Yiippi in the release. “That air keeps the board or ski from overheating even on the fastest racing team.”

According to the release, the artificial surface allows for more speed and less friction, and is also “ideal for straight travel, carving, travel speed and edge control.”

Skiers and snowboarders are required to wear long pants and helmets. They are also advised to wear leather gloves, along with knee and elbow pads.

Even before its grand opening, the ski resort said there are plans for expansion.

“By the summer of 2018, the 365 Synthetic Snow Park will go all the way to the top of the Ridge, that is over 2,800 feet,” said Haynes in the release.

That's cool that Powder ridge is actually going through with making the synthetic ski slope. Akamp up in Quebec also runs during the summer a rail park, pretty neat.

I think I would prefer indoor skiing in summer, who wants to be out there in 90 degree heat with pants long sleeves, elbow and knee pads and leather gloves? It's hot enough for me on Superstar in the spring with shorts and a t-shirt. The indoor skiing at least allows you to escape the heat.
