They use to award two silver medals if there was a tie for first. No gold was given out.

Tie-breaking doesn't need to be a full overtime period, but how it is accomplished should be defined for each event. Many Olympic events accommodate additional competition to determine the winner; not making that determination is a failure of concept. My suggestion for the 50k you ask? Dangle that solid gold carrot on a string behind a 4-wheeler at sprint speed till one athlete snags it or shuts down trying. Imagine the energy in the crowd as they circle the stadium! You want that gold medal, come and take it.

Having witnessed a XC world championship in Skandinavia, they need no help whipping people into a frenzy
In the scenario you outline, nobody would have ever beaten Vegard Ulvang :like
Marit Bjorgen has done a great job keeping Norway dominant in that sport.

Variable finish lines; the all new cross-country. Gives sprinting to the finish new meaning.

We happened to turn on the TV just as her run was being aired, and my daughter turns to me and says "What was that, you get more air out of the pipe than she did!" and we both laughed...I'm 56 with a fused-together back...

I didn't think of that, but I've never had any "medal" goals! Wait, couldn't I skip the sex-change operation and just declare that I just "identify myself as a female" or whatever that gender/PC talk is lately!?!?

I was just thinking, some of those "East German Women" in the 70's were waaaay more manly than I've ever been! I can't even imagine what some of them look like now (and I'm not going to google any pictures!).

That was epic. I mean, she did get up above the lip on a 24ft halfpipe, that's better than 99% of the women AND men at Killington. Obviously is a pretty good skier. Everybody needs a hobby, lol.
