There is ONE hotel on the South Rim. to ensure you have good weather, go the end of July and early August. The South Rim will be HOT, North Rim tolerable and the Canyon, well it's a freakin dessert, get over it.
Big camp ground on the North Rim but don't believe there are any suitable hotels nearbye. Hiking the canyon requires a long time and about gallon of water per person, so be prepared. It ain't easy. Tours are available an you can sleep in the canyon. Want a rush, do the White Water and Camping on the river. That should get you going.
Try US Dept of Interior and National Parks for more info. And, visit the painted desert while there. You can see how the local "Native Americans" live and treat white folk.

Went as a kid so I can't remember names of hotels to recommend. But, at one of the major "lookouts" into the Canyon, there's a small secondary rim just below the main rim, its wide enough to lay down on. Lay down on it, grab hold of the upper edge and pull your head up and look over the edge at the camera...will make a great picture, will look like you are falling into the canyon. That was my highlight of the trip. You going anywhere besides the Grand Canyon? Bryce and Zion Canyons were nice too. Horseback riding and saw lots of deer and all.

Take a donkey ride down then camp there overnight like the Brady Bunch did.
Now I'm thinking how funny it would be if you, Token & Zig wound up in a desserted old town with requisite tumbleweeds and some old cowboy locks the three of you up in the old jail. Would there be enough socks to tie together to get the key from the hook by the door?!

The whole place is a "rush". Seriously, the first moment I looked into the Canyon was almost an emotionally overwhelming experience. I've talked to many others who've had the same reaction in one way or another - it's almost mystical.
I was there about 9 years ago in late May. Beautiful time of year to go. I was in Phoenix on business, then went to Sedona and the Canyon. I have plenty of pictures along with hotel and side trip information here if you want to take a look. THE place to stay is El Tovar, right on the south rim in Grand Canyon Village. They're probably booked all summer though since it's one of those places that usually fills up way in advance. I'm not familiar with the rest of these but there are:
Kachina Lodge
Thunderbird Lodge
Both of those are on the rim
Maswik Lodge, on the west end
Yavapai Lodge, near the visitor center
I have info on tours and other stuff so stop by when you're up next time.

we were there many years ago before kids.
it is an awesome sight to see.
we were staying with some friends in phoenix, and drove there and back the same day. the temp change was amazing, putting more clothes on then peeling them off when we got back to 110 degree weather-in sept.
we went tubing down the verde river, everyone ties a bunch of inner tubes together and a cooler in the middle and float down for a few hours. the water is very cold and the air is very hot. we hitched a ride back to the start, everyone did that.
