as far as policy goes trump is doing very well...

outside of TDS afflicted fools who are apoplectic over just about any and very thing even remotely related to trump ( in fact even that which has absolutely zero to do with trump is till somehow trumps fault...)

Follow the money. How many here would seriously doubt that numerous officials in the Mexican government get payoffs from drug lords and coyote consortiums? Mexico until now was (mostly) following the best interest of one of its largest industries.

However, with $350 billion imported to the US from Mexico, and with an $81 billion trade surplus, Trump played a strategy that Mexico didn't want to risk playing with. Once manufacturing left Mexico due to tariffs, it might not come back.

All of us that know how to fix things keep in a drawer somewhere our BFH. It rarely comes out, it carries risks, and it's unwieldly. But when all the wrench extensions, penetrating fluid, gentle taps and heat doesn't work, out comes the BFH. I'm not saying the problem is fixed. I'm just commenting on tool selection.

What a fiasco this whole situation is.

A secret agreement that Mexico doesn't think is a secret.

An agreement to do all the things Mexico was already doing.

And Trump supporters lining up to praise him for this terrific piece of total incompetence. What a joke.

Under the agreement, Mexico vowed to deploy of thousands of National Guard units to the Mexico-Guatemala border. Hoping to ease concerns that Mexico is looking to militarize the border, Bárcena Coqui stressed the National Guard is a "police force," similar to militarized police units in European countries like Spain and France.

The joint declaration unveiled by both governments also includes a provision that says the U.S. will "immediately expand the implementation" of "Remain in Mexico," officially called the Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP). More than 10,000 asylum seekers have been returned to Mexico by U.S. authorities to await court hearings as the Trump administration prepares for the expansion of the controversial practice.

Under the resolution, Mexico made a remarkable commitment to not only allow those returned to stay in Mexico, but also provide them with work permits, health care and education — something immigration advocates have said has not occurred yet on a large scale.

Bárcena Coqui said she expects the new measures undertaken by both her government and the U.S. to curb migration flows from Central America in the coming weeks.

"We would hope that these will bring results in a very relative short term, like in a month or a month and a half," she said.
In Sunday tweets, the president wrote that "some things not mentioned in yesterday [sic] press release, one in particular, were agreed upon" and "will be announced at the appropriate time." Mexican Ambassador to the U.S. Martha Bárcena suggested in an interview Sunday with CBS News’ “Face the Nation” that additional agreements could surface beyond what the nations included in the joint statement.
Trump, meanwhile, kept open Sunday the possibility of slapping future tariffs on Mexico if there is not a significant drop in Central American migrants trying to enter the United States.

“We can always go back to our previous, very profitable, position of Tariffs,” he wrote on Twitter. “But I don’t believe that will be necessary.”

So we're ten days past the one year anniversary of Trump's China tariffs. I figure it's a pretty good time to assess how things are going.
China suddenly added a new member to its negotiating team — the country’s commerce minister Zhong Shan, who was present at last month’s G-20 summit and took part in a telephone conversation with the U.S. representatives last week. Zhong is seen by many officials in Washington as a hardliner, a sign the Chinese leader Xi Jinping is standing firm, the Washington Post reported.

His recent remarks in the Chinese press indicated his tough stance in the trade war.

“The U.S. side has provoked economic and trade frictions against us and violated the principles of the WTO. It is typical of unilateralism and protectionism,” Zhong told the People’s Daily on Monday, according to a Google translation. “We have to uphold our warrior spirit in firmly defending national and people’s interests in defending the multilateral trading system.” The People’s Daily is the official newspaper for the Communist Party in China.

The new development dampened analysts and investors’ hope for a resolution as some see the progress “in reverse.”

Hong Kong (CNN Business)China's economic growth has slumped to its lowest level in nearly three decades as the world's second largest economy feels the effects of a prolonged trade war with the United States.

The country's gross domestic product grew at 6.2% in the quarter ended June, the slowest quarterly growth rate since 1992 and down from 6.4% in the previous quarter, according to government figures released on Monday.
And the Chinese economy will continue to face "downward pressure" in the second half of this year, the country's National Bureau of Statistics said in a statement.
"The Chinese economy is still in a complex and grave situation,"
it said. "Global growth has slowed and external uncertainties are on the rise."

Our economy is fine. I wasn't commenting on that. I was commenting on how the Trump tariffs have been ineffective at getting China to agree on anything.
