Sorry if this belongs in the politics forum, but IMO this is beyond politics and should be appalling to everyone.

If you are local, there will be a peaceful protest in honor of George Floyd in Rutland at Main St park (corner of 4 and 7 with the gazebo) from 10am-4pm. Please join. Bring a mask, a sign, maintain 6'+ distance to be safe due to the virus.

Remember, white silence is VIOLENCE. If you are not speaking up against police brutality, especially towards the black community, you are complicit.

I'm appalled by the riots and police brutality. Let me know when the protests against looting and anarchist starts.

1. Gathering during a pandemic is probably not a great idea.

2. Vermont is very removed from this problem. Protesting this in Vermont is like protesting in Canada. Everyone knows where Vermont stands politically. Hatred does not grow in our rocky soil.

3. My silence is most certainly not violence.

If (when) orange man is reelected, Vermont should just secede. 2ND VERMONT REPUBLIC!

The only police brutality I see in Vermont comes from the Sheriff's in Bridgewater and Plymouth with the damn speeding tickets and it doesn't seem to be a racial thing, but have at it if it makes you feel better.

I have friends who are cops...clients same. With ZERO exceptions...at least from my often blurred perspective?.. great people. Every single one. The fat asshole...sitting in a sheriffs car ( lower case intentional here) in BWater and surrounding areas..is as much a cop...as I am a microcranial surgeon. Deputized?..yup. Arrest powers?..yup. Beyond that?.. worthless.

Don't feel so confident that the over zealous speed trap cops on the way to K should be your only concern in VT. Police brutality does occur in VT and they tend to get away with it.

Several years ago my uncle hit a soft spot on the road shoulder and his van slid off into the ditch. Occurred on his road, a typical VT dirt road less than 1/2 mile from his house. He and his wife walked home and figured they'd deal with it in the daylight. Not easy getting a tow truck at 10PM in very rural VT that won't charge an arm and a leg. Van was off the road enough to not obstruct traffic.

Cops showed up at 11PM and asked him to come outside. My uncle explained what happened through the screen door, but refused to let them in his house without a warrant. Cops got pissed and said he needed to step outside. He refused. They threatened him with charging him with leaving the scene of an accident. He said fine, let me get my jacket. Turns to get his jacket from the closet behind him. The cops barge through the door, tear him outside, throw him to the ground, beat him with their flashlights and arrested him, bringing him to the station. Said they entered the home and beat him because they thought he might be reaching for a gun. Let him go to his wife about an hour later.

He took them to court on a 4th amendment civil rights violation and assault complaint. AG dropped the case and said the cops simply needed more training on warrants and how to properly subdue people.

99% of cops are great people and do their jobs with honor and professionalism. I've never once had an issue myself and know several cops in my town. They have my trust. But the bad apples still get away with far too much. It happens everywhere and to all types of people.

We can do better.
