The word "squaw" was introduced by Lewis and Clark in 1805 and used by early fur traders and trappers, according to the University of Idaho. In today's social context, Native Americans understand the term to be a slur.

If native american tribes local to their area find it offensive, what is the big deal in dropping it, particularly where the two resorts Squaw and Alpine Meadows will be (or maybe already are???) connected?
Does not seem like something to get worked up about or has any effect on the skiing experience?

The calls to have the name of the resort changed come following the decision by Squaw Valley, CA to drop “Squaw” from its name.
