That is mostly correct. Initially democrats were staunchly segregationist. That started to change when Kennedy hit the scene. A bit later, Johnson became president and in 1964 signed the civil rights act, while Goldwater opposed it. Then Nixon pursued his "southern strategy" of pandering to southern whites. This all led to a seismic shift in support from R's to D's on the issue of racism, and a corresponding shift from D's to R's among segregationists/white supremacists. It's basically been that way ever since.
