Vaccination mandates
Vaccination mandates
I'd like to start this discussion. This is a world emergency and I believe there is no acceptable excuse for not getting the vaccine. Would anti vaxxers prefer another lockdown
and eventually another variant which evades the vaccines? Do they want to wear masks and social distance forever? Maybe they think if we have another 600,000 deaths it will vindicate Trump. I hope this is mostly preaching to the choir here.

Re: Vaccination mandates
We are seeing these start to pop up for sure.
Many Universities already have a mandate, a number of employers are announcing the same, NYC is going to have one for attending restaurants, shows etc.

Re: Vaccination mandates
Given how many people have received this vaccine and how few complications have been reported, it's hard to believe anyone would have hesitation over taking the vaccine. That said, mandates are not going to fly politically. This is the United States of America. Many here won't do something, even when it's in their best interest, for the sole reason that the government told them it was a good idea.
It would be great if schools and businesses mandated it rather than the federal or state government. Enforcement would be much easier and less burdensome. But again, politically, look at what a guy like Desantis is doing in fighting against these kinds of mandates.

Re: Vaccination mandates
We are not likely to see a blanket federal gov mandate. As you describe it will come from schools, businesses etc. Any government directives will be more based on convenience etc (see NYC where the vaccine is not mandatory, but if you don't have one you can't go to a show, indoor gym, dine indoors etc).easyrider16 wrote: ↑Aug 4th, '21, 06:04 Given how many people have received this vaccine and how few complications have been reported, it's hard to believe anyone would have hesitation over taking the vaccine. Many colleges already have one for the fall semester and most have exemptions for legitimate medical reasons but many are not allowing for the B.S. religions exemptions.

Re: Vaccination mandates
That's all very good but when the governors of a couple of our most populous states (FL+TX) not only refuse to support mandates, but actively fight against them, you're going to have a lot of people who remain unvaccinated. I think we'll be stuck dealing with Covid for the foreseeable future because of imbeciles like DeSantis and Abbott.
Re: Vaccination mandates
This is true for sure. Those two are coming of about a dumb on this as it gets. Meanwhile 1/3 of new cases in the US are coming from those two states alone.easyrider16 wrote: ↑Aug 4th, '21, 07:10 That's all very good but when the governors of a couple of our most populous states (FL+TX) not only refuse to support mandates, but actively fight against them, you're going to have a lot of people who remain unvaccinated. We are pretty much at the point in the US where there are two types of people. There are those who are vaccinated, and those who are going to get COVID. Yes there will be some breakthrough cases, but the overwhelming majority of those will be mild. As it stands now even with the delta variant something like 98% of the hospitalizations are people who are unvaccinated.
Honestly, at this point unless you are one of the extremely rare people who have a legitimate medical reason, you have to be pretty stupid to have not gotten the vaccine.

Re: Vaccination mandates
They’re going to need a whole new Darwin Award category for unvaccinated Covid deaths.

Re: Vaccination mandates
Not just that, but the overall degradation of healthcare quality and outcomes in general for conditions that have nothing to do with Covid.
There are health systems in Florida and elsewhere in the country that have to close up shop AGAIN to non-emergency treatments because of those that have chosen not to get vaccinated. They need to divert provider resources back to Covid care and away from some of their biggest profit centers.
So what does that mean? A reduced capacity to hire staff and purchase new technologies to improve their quality. In short, everyone loses.

Re: Vaccination mandates
Fast track on approval, not development. MRNA vaccines have been in the pipeline for 15 or so years. About the only thing he didn't f up with Covid.
Re: Vaccination mandates
Trump certainly deserves a share of credit for operation warp speed and the quick development of the vaccine.
It is too bad he didn't take more of a victory lap on that and help promote it to his followers. If he had, we might be in a better place than we seem to be right now. That was a failure of leadership on his part.
