A Texas man firing an AR-15 in his front yard killed five people in a neighboring home after they asked him to stop shooting because a baby was sleeping. Police said all were shot execution-style; the youngest victim was 8-years-old.

Spainhouer said he also found a child, who survived while covered by his protective mother who had been killed.
"When I rolled the mother over, he came out. I asked him if he was OK and he said, 'My mom is hurt, my mom is hurt.' So rather than traumatize him, I pulled him around the corner sat him down and he was covered from head to toe...like somebody poured blood on him."
Spainhouer said what he witnessed Saturday will haunt him for the rest of his life.
"No one can see what we saw today and not be affected by it," he said. "It's not a situation I would wish upon anybody, it's just unfathomable to see carnage."
Spainhouer's son says two customers inside the H&M store were among those injured. "It's tough when you see a family that's out shopping, having fun, get wiped off the face of the Earth because somebody with a gun has some other type of issue."

Re: Enough
The "enforce existing gun laws" option in that poll makes me think the gun lobby has pulled one over on the much of the public. What existing gun laws exactly would have prevented these mass shootings? Is there even any evidence that there are laws on the books that aren't being enforced? Seems to me in a number of these stories you have cops saying things like, we don't have the tools, and, there was nothing we could do to avert this shooting because the gun was legal.

Re: Enough
Went on a bike ride last night with my 8 year old to show him new expanded boundaries of where he can ride by himself in the neighborhood. I felt the need to repeatedly remind him to stay clear of other people's driveways and cars, even cars parked in the street. Even if his friends say it's okay, to not do it and tell them they shouldn't either.. And if any strangers approach him, to ride immediately home. We live in statistically one of the very safest towns in all of New Hampshire. But, you never know.
Now, my parents said the same stuff to me 40 years ago, but it didn't include the reasons I have had to share about little kids getting shot for basically being young, curious or oblivious like kids can be.
Totally sucks what gun culture is doing to our society. Yet so many Republicans live by "An armed society is a polite society."

Ralph Yarl, Kaylin Gillis, and the Consequences of American Fearmongering

These incidents are a warped reflection of a mental state we’ve seen over and over again in fiction: not the castle-protecting knight, but the paranoid loner, certain the world is a more dangerous place than it really is, who spontaneously defends his turf with the gun he just happens to have in his possession. These types have always been with us, but the 21st century has brought us a new variation. Many fears of a civilization gone mad—particularly when those fears are of a nation of white people under attack—have been stoked by fantasy factories masquerading as news organizations.

Check your common sense at the door. I think any fool should be able to see that more guns on the street would correlate to more gun violence. Yet right-wingers seem to very easily allow themselves to be convinced otherwise.deadheadskier wrote: ↑May 9th, '23, 05:47Totally sucks what gun culture is doing to our society. Former Gun Company Executive Explains Roots of America’s Gun Violence Epidemic
https://www.propublica.org/article/ryan ... n-violence

What caused the radicalization?
It was a combination of factors. After Columbine in 1999, the National Rifle Association in very well-publicized meetings now, thanks to sleuthing and digging by reporters at NPR, we now have tapes of the meetings where they literally said, are we going to be part of the solution here? Or maybe we can use these things to drum up hate and fear in our members? We might even be able to use them to drive membership. And they chose the latter. They perfected that system for about seven or eight years, getting their feet underneath them. They figured out it can drive politics. And then an explosion hit. That explosion was the future Black president leading in the polls in 2007. And then Barack Obama won in 2008. So you have this sort of uncapping of hate and conspiracy, much of it racially driven, that the NRA was tapping into. Prior to 2007, people in the United States never purchased more than 7 million guns in a single year. By the time Barack Obama left office, the United States was purchasing almost 17 million guns a year. And so I think it’s impossible to discount the degree to which Obama’s presidency lit this whole thing on fire.

Re: Enough
Truly, Republicans do not care about mass shootings, as they have demonstrated by passing this resolution against some of the most minimal gun regulation possible.
This puts the GOP out of touch with most Americans.
In light of the continuing school shootings, wtf is wrong with these people?
https://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/hou ... -100051831House Republicans passed a resolution that would repeal a Biden administration rule tightening federal regulations on stabilizing braces for firearms, an accessory that has been used in several mass shootings in the U.S. over the last decade.

Vast majorities also support raising the legal age to buy guns to 21 (81%) and requiring mental health checks for all gun purchasers (80%). 80% of voters say police should be allowed take guns away from people considered a danger to themselves or others. 61% of voters support banning assault rifles and semi-automatic weapons.
