Makes me wonder if when any of these idiots get out of jail that they seek retaliation against Trump.

After they get out of jail because Trump pardoned them? Why would they retaliate?

My comment was made on the assumption that Trump doesn't win and have that ability to pardon. Yes, I recognize he very well might win.

If he does win and ends up pardoning all of these seditious traitors, then it wouldn't surprise me if he finds himself in the cross hairs of someone else. Trump pardoning these losers would be the most unamerican thing a US president has ever done. There would be many Americans who would want to take him out for doing that.

I would not underestimate his ability to get re-elected or going “more unamerican” than he’s ever been. If Trump becomes president, he’ll be going scorched earth.

This is one of the scarier moments in U.S. history, I think. If Trump gets elected, it's going to be a series of Constitutional crises. For example, he will most likely try to pardon himself, and SCOTUS is going to have to decide if that's Constitutional. I'm guessing the answer is no, but since nobody's ever tried to do it before, who knows?

I think DeSantis is not as strong a candidate as the GOP wants him to be. I don't think he's all that bright and he's very capable of shooting himself in the foot (see e.g. Disney). That said, it'll be interesting to see if he can edge out Trump now that his campaign has started.

Right now DeSantis v. Biden looks like it favors DeSantis, but I suspect that might change. DeSantis has done some really kooky stuff in FL what with banning books and don't say gay etc., and I doubt that will play well on the national stage.

I like Sununu a lot. Unfortunately, he is an outlier in today's republican party.

I'm also not sure I'll vote for a Republican for president until the supreme court is more balanced out to where it was before.

Stranger things have happened, but I doubt Sununu has a chance. It is kind of a wide open field on the GOP side though. Both Trump and DeSantis, the biggest leaders so far, look vulnerable.

The statute under which he was convicted has a 20 year max sentence. Not clear to me why he didn't get the max.

The Justice Department on Wednesday appealed the sentences handed down to seven members of the Oath Keepers — including founder Stewart Rhodes — for their roles in the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, a signal that prosecutors are not satisfied with the severity of the jail terms delivered by the federal judge overseeing the case.

U.S. District Court Judge Amit Mehta sentenced Rhodes to 18 years in prison — the harshest sentence for any Jan. 6 defendant — reflecting his leadership of what Mehta characterized as a dangerous criminal conspiracy aimed at violently derailing the transfer of presidential power.

Nevertheless, the sentence for the Yale Law School graduate and disbarred attorney was seven years shorter than the 25-year prison term prosecutors recommended and four years below an agreed-upon “guidelines range” based upon Rhodes’ conduct.

In a series of filings, prosecutors also signaled they were appealing the sentences — all delivered by Mehta, an appointee of President Barack Obama — of several other defendants convicted for their own role in Rhodes’ alleged conspiracy.

Former President Donald Trump on Tuesday said he has been told he is a target in the Jan. 6 criminal investigation by special counsel Jack Smith.

Smith already has criminally charged Trump with about two dozen crimes related to retaining classified documents when he left the White House.

Trump also suggested he may soon face indictment for the Jan. 6 probe, which is focused on Trump’s efforts to overturn his loss in the 2020 election to President Joe Biden. Trump posted his statement on his Truth Social account.

Internal Secret Service emails obtained by CREW show special agents in close communication with Oath Keepers leader Stewart Rhodes, while failing to acknowledge the group’s ties to white nationalists and clashes with law enforcement.

In September 2020, a Secret Service agent sent an email to others within the agency, informing them that he had just spoken to Oath Keepers founder Stewart Rhodes about an upcoming visit by then-President Trump to Fayetteville, NC. The agent, who referred to himself as “the unofficial liaison to the Oath Keepers (inching towards official),” described the group as “primarily retired law enforcement/former military members who are very pro-LEO [law enforcement officer] and Pro Trump. Their stated purpose is to provide protection and medical attention to Trump supporters if they come under attack by leftist groups.” He went on to say that Rhodes, “had specific questions and wanted to liaison [sic] with our personnel” and shared Rhodes’s cell phone number.
