Columbus Day or indigenous peoples day?

Post by VTbound »

Just got the drift email and noticed that Columbus Day is no more according to Killington. I don’t mind dual billing, but there is no mention of Columbus. :dislike

Vermont changed the holiday to Indigenous Peoples Day a year or two ago.

When are they going to remove "Kill" from Killington???????? When are the going to remove everything related to Iroquois who killed-enslaved other indigenous people long before the arrival of Europeans. They absolutely terrorized east coast indigenous people and hated the Algonquins even more. When are they going to remove everything related to Algonquins who killed-enslaved the Iroquois and other indigenous people? The Algonquins (especially the Hurons/Great Lakes tribes) also ate their enemies? They believed when you ate your enemies heart, it made you stronger? How much longer do we have to suffer knowing about all this murder and enslavement and this inhumane cannibalisms? When are we going to erase the history of indigenous people?

I'm still calling it Columbus day, and no one can do anything about it.

Columbus was a slaver and did some pretty awful things. There is a lot of revisionist history about him taught in public schools. I was taught that he discovered America, which is not true. I was never taught that one of the primary objectives of his voyage was to take slaves, which he apparently did a lot. I'm glad we now live in a world where such revisionist history is uncovered and the truth is told.

Columbus was not American or a founding father, and made few if any positive contributions to our society. I see no reason why the man's name should be attached to a holiday.

If you agree to remove Columbus' name from any federal holidays, I will agree to remove the Iroquois and Algonquin names from any federal holidays.

I don't really understand why people equate changing names and taking down monuments with destroying history. There are no holidays or statues celebrating Hitler or Stalin in the U.S. yet everybody still learns all about them.
