Friday, Dec 15–Wind Hold

Post by rogman »

LIFT DELAYS
The following lifts are on hold due to wind: Snowshed Quad, Skyeship Gondola Stage II, K-1 Gondola, Superstar Express, and Snowdon Six Express.

OPEN LIFTS
Snowdon Triple, Canyon Quad, Ramshead Express, and North Ridge Quad will open at 9:00 a.m. today. 12/15

I’m on wind hold, too. What’s available doesn’t seem worth the effort. Hopefully the wind will abate, but I’m not optimistic.

🤬😡🤬. Report could have been posted earlier of potential wind holds - nooooooo, let's get the customer here, then let them roam around only to be told, “what are we supposed to do about wind?” How about posting earlier on report, or send on text - they sure can do when someone wins a Yeti for getting the most vertical - this is really rediculous!!!!!! And yes, get off my lawn🤬

Edit to add: I am quite aware there is nothing the mountain can do about Mother Nature’s wrath, but getting information out to their customer could be improved!

Sitting in K-1 Lodge... Drove up for the day. The wind is honking and NWS says it is going to get worse.

In defense of the mountain, when I checked the weather yesterday, i did not see a protection of this kind of wind for the whole day.

Something changed in the forecast.

Debating whether I burn an Ikon day for this, or just kick around the access road for the day.

Winds are forecast to increase and peak at noon, and shift into WNW. Not getting better anytime soon.... if you want to believe the forecast.

This is really useful information! Killington should put this on their website!

yup sometimes the early bird doesn't get the worm. in fact maybe today we were the worm.

lots of wind as noted and most lifts on hold at the bell. can't speak about communication. checked shortly after arriving at 8:35 and saw the news. doubling our fun was the viz or lack thereof. upper mtn blanketed in heavy fog. in any case with the triple the only lift, it was slow going. probably did a record number of killinks  . the snow surface for the most part was actually pretty decent. skied the NR and LEF. stayed off the nats (new skis, couldn't see and they're mostly trashed). gonna call supe rotd. had it to ourselves and it hardly been skied. perfect carving.

and of course as fate would have it, the bubble was loading at noon and the sun was coming out when i was pulling out. and now only stage 2 is on hold. could be a decent afternoon for the captain's shift. (thanks cap - great job w the sound last nite).

fwiw from stratton: All aerial lifts with the exception of American Express are delayed due to extremely high winds. similar at okemo. one of those days.

Well certainly sounds like Pico was the place to be today. No wind holds, in fact it didn't even seem very windy at all. Top was in the clouds all morning but cleared after lunch. Some examples of poor grooming, particularly on Middle Pike, but other places were excellent. Monday's snow was settled and on the dense side, so the ungroomed terrain skied better and better as the trails got skied in.

I skinned Pico this morning and thought it would be a good day to ski here. Turned out to be the right choice. Had the place to our selves. What a treat.

Maybe it's time to get a new snow reporter to handle dispensing usefull information such as Pico didn't have any windholds.

I mean they posted their conditions on SM as well as their web page where they didn't say summit was on wind hold.
I don't know what more we could of asked for? Seems like the info was there and nothing was withheld.

Went on killington.com to check webcams around 8am and huge banner across the top two colors yellow the lifts on hold green the ones open. I usually take issue with the snow report but what are folks expecting, a robo call? Do your homework.

You are 100% correct. I’ve got only myself to blame for not reading the report. No matter how old we get we keep learning lessons every day !

The high winds were also tele communicated by NOAA and other weather folks such as Skiology and Open Snow
