EMS is under pressure across the country. That there's a willing lot to respond to blood and guts episodes has my respect. Wondering if any
posters on this thread are certified and trained to respond to serious accidents on a mountain? It's a ton of training and dedication. It's not as if Mike is the janitor, and yet having taken the time to inform, i figured there would be respect given vs arguing the point.

The Epic Mix app is tied to your pass, but the Killington app isn't. I heard of someone who got popped at Stowe for it.

But if you want to stop people from breaking into houses you put up neighborhood watch signs and you advertise about the new video surveillance system. Then houses don’t get broken into which is what you are trying to prevent. And in this case the poachers are your customers so you really should want to do everything you can do to keep them from doing something dumb and ruing your relationship with them.

I don't know why any of you are using the apps from your mountain. If you don't think the parent company (Powder, vail, etc.) is datamining, then you are mistaken.

There are several standalone tracking apps that I'm sure work better than what Powder or Vail can come up with.

You think the stand alone apps aren't selling the data they are collecting? Maybe it can't be used to catch you poaching, but they most certainly are making money off it.

the app I use actually says they don't sell the data, which is why it costs money to use. I can't speak for others.

You're right though these little computers we've come so reliant on are constantly mining data.

I only use the K App for Lift / Trail status during the day. And as I've been posting, there are doing a crappy job keeping the info accurately updated.

I keep the App turned off and re-open it when I want to check something.

Re: GPS tracking. You can turn this on, or off, in K App. I have never had mine turned on.

used the k app 2 seasons ago. got more caught up in the vertical thing than i wanted to. now i use "ski tracks" and "we ski" for myself. same w days. even though i don't ski most saturdays or the crap days, still get my 120-130 and they're mostly good.

I also use both Ski Tracks and We Ski. I like the interface/graphics on We Ski. I have a longer history of info on Ski Tracks. What was originally "Alpine Replay" was discontinued, and I lost a lot of history there. I do use the K app, but I ski a bunch of other mountains over the course of the season.

I think the K app is actually pretty good. The Epic App is horrible.

As for data mining in our lives, drawing the line with ski apps is like worrying about spilling milk on a boat that has a giant hole in the bottom of the hull. If you are that worried about data mining, you are already quite screwed.
2014 - "A South Ridge trail is Pipe Dream. A South Ridge lift shouldn't be."
2019 - "A South Ridge trail is Pipe Dream. A South Ridge lift (operating midweek) shouldn't be."
2023 - Killington announces that the South Ridge lift will run five days a week.
2024 - Killington lied.

My problem with the K app is that the one thing I would use it for, to find out conditions and status of lifts and trails, is almost never accurate. Beyond that the app is pretty much useless to me.

Not exactly showing off the most extensive snowmaking system on the planet either as K should be blowing the doors off its competition and isn't...but given the condition of things in VT, NH, and ME after this storm, I'd rather not take the time right now to be petty. So let's move on for now.

Killington appears to be more water limited than they are letting on at the moment. They aren’t running enough guns to be air limited even in these conditions.
