sunday 12/24 report

Post by skiadikt »

merry christmas. guess we've been nice since we didn't get our annual xmas eve deluge followed by the usual deep freeze. not the prettiest day w clouds and fog high up. warm temps. did get some wet, light to heavy snow during the 8-11 shift. mixed in nicely but no real acum. not crowded but more fannies today than yesterday.

bear at the bell. will call that 1st run on claw/burst rotd. cream cheese. repeated. same situation on cruise. both trails perfect 10's early. high road as well as the trails with the new snow were the best. overall conditions were soft trending towards hero snow. skye lark quite good. middle supe skied real well but the HW & preston's had some icy spots.

decided not to deal w the fog on the NR but it skied well on our way to LEF which was good. bunny/trap/chute softened nicely. highline was only ok as some sections are down to that hard base. with temps warming daily, looks like we should see good conditions for most of the week. hopefully the snowpack holds up.

Based on the amount of people I see coming down Claw Burst they got Bear open just in the nick of time. Depositing that many bodies elsewhere would really not be a good experience for anyone.

Loaded two chairs behind ‘adkt at the bell. Our cru had 7: 10, 9, 9’s friend the SR refugee, four, the ‘rents, and me. We headed immediately to Needles, four not ready for Claw-Burst. Conditions on Cruise were exquisite. 10 declared it a do over, and who was I to argue? We then finally hit Claw-burst, and it didn’t disappoint. Truth is, a combination of good grooming and warmer temperatures meant everything skied well; SS, Eastfall, Highline, Skyelark, the usual skunks at the party, easily surpassed expectations.

DIdn’t see any snowmaking, but didn’t venture up the K1 either. Guns were off on Upper Bitter, there appeared to be enough snow made to open with some judicious farming, but hopefully draining for a day since the snow was still in whales and the trail was closed.

So Killington through a combination of skill (good snow making deployment choices), and luck (the temp and humidity stayed just low enough and just long enough) seems to have dodged a major Christmas week bullet. Moving forward, expect it to be crowded; lot of uphill capacity, without the terrain area to spread people out. At least the skiing will be good. It will be crowded, busy, and the energy off the charts. Mike and his team have earned this.

9:30 at snowshed. Groomed run past the yurt. Couple of cruises to warm up. Hero snow.

Sup ok. Sky better. Couple over there. Bubble laps to high line rotd again.

Foggy north ridge. LEF edgeable. Headed to Bear for the bar season opener. Light crowd.

Bear chair loading today. Good blow over in wildfire woods.

Couple of turns with the Captain. Good to see him.

More high lines to call it around 3 to start cooking.

Merry Xmas.
