Best and worst snow years

Post by Mister Moose »

We all know that 2015-16 was the worst snow year in recent memory. I think it was 84 inches season total here at Killington, with numerous warm ups/wet freezes. But what was the worst snow year?

The brown line is this year.

Although it was quite bad, 15-16 wasn't the worst year. The worst was 60-61, that is the lowest line mid season on the Mansfield snow stake records, which dates back to 54-55.

I've been hearing some complaining on how winters are no longer what they used to be. Take heart, Kzoners, the end of skiing is not near. The second best snow year since 1955 was (drum roll please)....

2018-19. Just 5 years ago was the second best season since 1955. This site is fun to look at for perspective, and you can highlight any season you like:

Any data that tracks r*in and thaw cycles in addition to the snowfall?

GIS has been keeping r*in/freeze count lately, but access to the data costs you as beer.

Thaws can be seen midwinter as declines in snowpack, r*in; your guess. In the graph above of 60-61, look at the significant thaws in early December and early January.
