thursday 2/1/24 (pico) report

Post by skiadikt »

"one way or another this darkness got to give" ... pico race day. just another very foggy day with just a brief period of freezing drizzle at the place no one should go. heard k was rather foggy as well. 10:30-4 shift.

fog didn't stop us from having a great day. pretty much let 'em rip groomers. excellent snow conditions as the new snow rolled in nicely softening the surface mtn wide. with no traffic held up all day. only ungroomed we hit was A slope. pow on top but lots of ice below. skiable but not a do over. summit glade reported to be similar. surprise of the day was birch glade which is usually a pow stash but had been groomed to perfection.

fwiw freezing driz had returned when we left at 5:30.

Afternoon Report: Short stint in between errands in Rut Vegas and getting ready for the Liquid Art Open Mic. Parked as Skyeship so different route today. Worst viz of the week! Sorta stayed low and a few in the trees where viz was better and great definition with all of the sticks and twigs blowdown in the woods.

Supe off the Skyeship to get to Rams Head. Poor viz and nothing special.

ROTD: Twister. Good cover and not as icy as some other places. Squeeze Play very good as well and less icy with it's gentler pitch.

LEF OK. Wildfire still good but poor viz top section. Cruise Control good with a bit better viz. Home Stretch / Great Eastern down to Rte 4 fine.

Enough of this fog, drizzle, etc. already.

Hopefully one day we can ski a few runs together ! Yeah it was the emptiest I’ve ever seen it . I don’t think I saw a dozen people all afternoon. Ski right on every lift ..

No , 75 runs , 29 miles in 5 hours won me the Bronze Medal. Thing is I had no idea it was a competition and took an hour lunch and a beer up top , but once I realized I was in a competition I stayed and got last chair at 4 .
