Actually, there were 2 trailside homes below the current Sunrise base. Those houses are still there, the ski trails are gone for the most part, what is left of them are used for snowmobile tours out of the old Sunrise base lodge.newpylong1 wrote: ↑Feb 14th, '24, 20:31There were zero ski on ski off houses below current base terminal for Sunrise Triple, no obligations unlike Route 4.hillbangin wrote: ↑Feb 14th, '24, 17:03Can you elaborate? Is Killington/Powdr obligated to run a lift to Rt 4?
They closed the Northeast Passage?

Which two are you referring to? If you're talking about the two built smack dab in the middle of Noreaster those parcels were sold and they were built after Northeast Passage was abandoned.

Historic aerials show the houses existing at least as far back as 1994. Wasn't the Northeast Passage lift abandoned in 1998?newpylong1 wrote: ↑Feb 15th, '24, 11:51 Which two are you referring to? Re: Closing Skyship
Yes 1998 was the last year. Had to look up the ones you guys are talking about on a map. No not those two, they aren't/weren't in the middle of the trail. From my recollection the driveway to the one to the east of the lift actually went under the trail. Does anyone else remember that? I was referring to a couple additional ones that were built more in the middle of Noreaster since it was abandoned as the snowmobile tours use Sun Dog (more mellow route). But I stand corrected, I totally forgot about those two existing homes until I saw the map.

Re: Closing Skyship
Yup, both of them were built at the time the Northeast Passage was built. In fact, there was a ski trail bridge on Nor'easter trail over the driveway for the house on the left as you were going up the lift. You used to be able to catch a little air off of it. The house on the right as you were going up the lift was a duplex and I stayed in the lower unit once back in the early 90's when lower Sunrise Mountain was still open. I still lament the loss of that area every time I drive by it.Stormchaser wrote: ↑Feb 15th, '24, 12:08Historic aerials show the houses existing at least as far back as 1994. I've posted this before but here is NEP on a powder day after a Nor'easter back in March of 96. Remember when we used to have Nor'easters?

Ah ha, I thought I remembered a bridge there but I was only in my teens. I'm glad someone documented this piece of history. You or someone else posted a ton of pictures like 10 years ago here and I downloaded them. Not to ever upload anywhere but for my own nostalgia... Loading the chair outside the Sunrise Cafe and looking up at those towers definitely makes me sad.

Re: Closing Skyship
great pics. didn't ski NEP much because of the "commute" and the long lift ride but once in a while to get away from the crowds. doubt there was ever a line there. on a pow day, the runs from mid-station down were "secret stashes." once took a beginner from the peak to the NEP base. that was one long run.
looking at it, remembered how much snow they had to make to cover that terrain at low elevation. and the fiddle would usually get snowmaking as well. believe those were the days before the woodward connection and low-e guns. energy was a lot cheaper and it was brute force snowmaking. not saying they make less snow now but it seems they cover a lot less terrain. of course they didn't have the terrain parks with their ginormous features then, which are certainly a major drain on snowmaking resources.

Re: Closing Skyship
And, as one of the Snow Nymphs, back in the day we were renting the house [from Killington; Sue Smith's old house] just across the street from the Back Behind and the NEP lift ! We had a bar/restaurant, two convenience stores, and a lift within walking distance of our house.
Goes to show, you don't never know
Watch each card you play, and play it slow
Don't you let that deal go down
Don't you let that deal go down
Looks like its going down no matter what I do !!!

Re: Closing Skyship
are there any plans/pics/renderings showing what the trails and lift network for what Parkers Gore would have been?
